교육영화론 연구: 오손 웰즈의 <시민 케인>을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 논문에서 ‘교육영화’는 ‘교육을 수행하는 영화’, 즉 ‘교육의 잠재적 역량을 가진 영화’로 규정된다. 이 규정은 ‘교육을 내용으로 하는 영화’를 그 내용적 측면으로 포함하면서, 동시에 영화의 기법을 그 표현적 측면으로 포함한다. 역사적으로 볼 때, 대중의 정치와 근대적 테크놀로지를 기반으로 급속히 발전한 영화는 오락과 주술, 그리고 전쟁의 도구로 이용되었다. 하지만 2차 대전을 전후로 영화는 스스로의 예술적 진로를 모색하게 되는데, 그 기점에 오손 웰즈의 <시민 케인>이 있다. 위대한 최초의 시간의 영화로 평가되는 이 영화는, 주인공 케인의 죽음과 지인들의 그에 대한 회상을 통하여, 케인의 삶의 면모를 다각도로 탐색하고 있다. 내용적 층위에서 ‘로즈버드’는 이미 가지고 있던 것을 잃은 것으로 생각함으로써 가지고 있던 모든 것을 잃게 되는 케인의 삶의 비밀을 드러낸다. 소극적인 방식으로 이 영화의 내용에 드러나는 교육은 충만한 잠재성과 결여된 현실성 사이의 ‘약간의 차이’를 깨닫는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 한편, 표현적 층위에서 ‘시퀀스 쇼트’는 회상을 넘어서는 순수기억의 유동적 지대로 우리를 이끌고 간다. 이 지대는 인생이 항상적으로 위기이자 동시에 구원의 기회라는 것을 보여준다. 적극적인 방식으로 이 영화의 표현에 드러나는 교육은 ‘작은 실천’으로 삶을 변용할 잠재적 능력의 현실화로 볼 수 있다. <시민 케인>은 표현의 ‘탈영토화’ 계수가 내용의 그것을 상회하는 전형적인 교육영화이다. Educational cinema is defined as ‘a cinema of educational effectuation’ in this article. This definition includes not only ‘a cinema of educational representation’ on the content aspect of it, but also filming techniques as the expression aspect. Composed of the movement-image materials, cinema as a monument that had rapidly grown up based on mass politics and modern technology in the early 20th century and had become the means for entertainment, magic and the war. Cinema, however, had ardently explored ways toward an art before and after World War II, resulting in the film milestone Citizen Kane, written, produced, directed, and acted by a man of genius, Orson Welles, at the age of 25. Called ‘the first great film’, Citizen Kane delves into the many facets of Mr. Kane’s life delivered by five byplayers: Susan, his ex-wife; Thatcher, his guardian; Bernstein, his official; Leland, his close friend; and Raymond, his steward. On the one hand, in the content aspect of the film, ‘Rosebud’ discloses the secret of life that has lost everything by portraying how Mr. Kane had lost what he already possessed. A negative point of view on the content aspect of the film reveals that education is no more than an enlightened realization that happiness in life comes from the ‘slight differences’. On the other hand, the ‘sequence shots’ in several scenes lead us to a fluid or virtual zone beyond the recollection image. The zone lets us know that just as Mr. Kane’s life consists of a constant crisis, so does the chance for instant relief. A positive point of view on the expression aspect reveals that education is the actualization of the virtual capacity that can change life by means of ‘little practices.’ The film Citizen Kane, in which the deterritorializational degree of the expression aspect is higher than that of the content, is a model for educational cinema.
