다문화가정 자녀에 대한 교사의 인식 연구: 서울의 한 초등학교를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 다문화가정 자녀들의 사회화 과정에 중요한 역할을 담당하는 교사들의 다문화가정 자녀들에 대한 인식과 상호작용 방안 모색 과정을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울의 한 학교와 그 지역의 지원센터 방과 후 프로그램 수업과정에 대한 참여관찰을 실시하였으며, 교사들을 대상으로 심층면담을 수행하였다. 다문화가정 자녀들에 대한 축적된 경험이 없는 상황에서 교사들은 보다 연륜이 있는 주변인들에게 조언을 구하거나 명쾌한 대안 없이 답답한 상황을 보내고 있다. 교사들은 나름대로 시행착오를 거치면서 지원 프로그램이나 개별 학생과의 학습 지도 방식을 모색하고 있지만, 교육현장에 참여하기 시작한 ‘이질적’ 구성원들과 상호작용하는 과정에서 기존의 교실 관행이 그대로 유지되지 못함을 느끼고 이에 대해 불편해 하고 있었다. 교사들은 일반학생들과 ‘똑같이’ 대해야 한다는 의식과 ‘다름’을 배려해야 하는 실제 상황 사이에서 갈등하고 있다. 한국사회에서 다문화가정 자녀들이 교육에 대한 접근 및 성취 기회에서 구조적으로 차별받지 않도록 제도적 기반이 마련되어야 하는 것과 함께, 일상생활에서 다양성과 다름에 대해서 적절히 인식하고 반응할 수 있도록 하는 것은 향후 다문화교육의 주된 과제가 되어야 할 것이다. This study attempts to explore teachers` perception of the children of migrants and their process of interaction in the classroom, as teachers play an important role in influencing the socialization of such children. For this purpose, I undertook participant observation in school classrooms and a support center located in Seoul and conducted in-depth interviews with the children of migrants and their teachers. It was observed that owing to the lack of cumulated experience in dealing with the children of migrants, the teachers have to consult with more experienced teachers or spend considerable time finding comprehensive guides. While interacting with the 'different' students, the teachers were uncomfortable managing their classrooms as they could not continue with the prevailing teaching methods, which were designed for the Korean students. The teachers found it difficult to properly deal with the 'common' and 'different' characteristics of these children relative to the Korean students. Therefore, multicultural education should primarily involve the development of appropriate social recognition of diversity and differences in everyday context moreover, an institutional system should be established to eliminate structured discrimination in order to facilitate the education and achievement of the children of migrants.
