양로원 할머니들의 죽음인식과 교육과의 관계 고찰

국문 초록

죽음은 삶과 분리되어 있지 않다. 살아감과 죽어감은 동전의 양면과 같기에 삶을 고양하는 교육은 동시에 죽음을 살필 필요를 가진다. 이런 의도에서 죽음과 비교적 가까이 있다고 여겨지는 양로원 할머니들의 죽음인식과 이에 대한 교육적 해석을 시도해 보았다. 관찰과 면담, 문화적 자료 수집을 병행하였고 자료수집 후 기술, 분석, 해석의 과정을 거쳐 문화주제와 유형 찾기를 시도하였다. 양로원 할머니들의 죽음인식은 시간, 공간, 관계, 신체의 틀을 통해 보는 “늙으면 죽어야지!” “살아도 사는 게 아냐!” “이게 다 팔자지!”의 문화주제로 나타난다. “늙으면 죽어야지!”는 다시 그 주제를 인정하는 경우, 부정하는 경우, 표현하지 않는 경우로 나뉜다. 동시에 시간, 공간, 관계, 신체가 복합적으로 작용하면서 죽음에 대한 인식을 만들어 감을 볼 수 있었다. “살아도 사는 게 아냐!”는 ‘죽음을 살아가기’로 이해되며 살아가는 죽음은 심리적, 사회적, 정신적, 체제적, 문화적 죽음을 살아간 후 신체적 죽음으로 종결된다. “이게 다 팔자지!”는 살아옴을 요약하는 주제면서 동시에 죽음을 설명하는 기능을 하는데 다시 체념과 관성과 희망으로 분류되고 있다. 한편 양로원 할머니들의 죽음인식은 영성과 죽음수용성을 축으로 하여 불가지형, 허무형, 적극형, 소극형의 네 영역으로 유형화할 수 있다. 이러한 양로원 할머니들의 죽음인식은 교육의 지점과 교차하는데 영성, 희망과 감사가 죽음을 인식하게 하면서 동시에 교육을 촉진하는 요소로 작동하는 것으로 해석되었다. Death does not divided from life, because living and dying both sides of a coin, education should be reflected with death. For this purpose I tried to interpretate the educational meaning of recognition of death among female senior citizens in a home for the aged. After observation, interviews, collection of cultural themes, I have done description, analysis and interpretation to find cultural themes and patterns. Cultural themes about Death recognition through the frames of time, space, human relations, and activities of these women in a home for the aged include “we should die as we get older!”, “I'm not living even though I live!” and “All that I've lived is fate!” “we should die as we get older!” is categorized in three parts: agreeing to that cultural theme, denying that cultural theme, and silence due to fear of death. The frames of time, space, human relation, and activities of these senior women are working together at the same time, enabling recognition of death. “I'm not living even though I live!” can translate “living dying” is about mental death, social death, systematical death, psychical death, cultural death, and physical death as the last dying step. “All that I've lived is fate!” is explains a life resigned to the unknowable, emptiness, positive and passive according to the axis of spirituality and death receptivity. The recognition of death among these senior women living in a home for the aged is crossed the possibility of education. Spirituality, hope, and gratefulness are derived from recognizing that death is inevitable for aged women in a home.
