국문 초록

최근 도덕교육 분야에서 주목받고 있는 ‘덕윤리학’은 ‘德’(또는 덕성)의 형성을 강조한다는 점에서 우리의 유교적 전통과 유사한 면이 있다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 현대의 덕윤리학에서 ‘덕의 추구’는 자유주의 사회에서의 공적 윤리의 범람에 따른 사적 윤리의 공백을 채우기 위한 방안으로서, ‘시민’으로서의 덕과는 구별되는 ‘개인’ 또는 ‘인간’으로서의 덕을 함양해야 한다는 한정된 의미를 가진다. 도덕교육의 유교적 전통에서 ‘덕의 함양’이 가지는 의미와 특이성은 성리학의 이론에 의하여 가장 선명하게 부각된다. 덕윤리학의 관점이 개별적 행위의 원천으로서의 행위자와 덕을 중시하면서도 그 관심이 마음 안의 원천에는 미치지 못하는 것과는 달리, 성리학의 관점은 진정한 의미에서의 도덕성의 내적 원천으로서의 ‘性’(또는 심성)의 함양에 목적을 둔다. 오늘날 한국 사회가 서양 사회와는 정반대로, 공적 윤리의 부재에 따른 사적 윤리의 범람이라는 문제에 직면해 있다면, 이 문제 또한 심성의 함양이라는 도덕교육의 근본 목적에 비추어 해석될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

There is an opinion that the emphasis of cultivating of virtues in virtue ethics is consistent with our Confucian tradition of moral education. However, the meaning of pursuit of virtue in current virtue ethics is limitedly defined as education of not civic but personal virtues for a measure to fill up the blank of private ethics in consequence of the spillover of public ethics in Western liberalistic society. The significance and uniqueness of education for cultivating virtues in Confucian tradition is most clearly explained by the Neo-Confucianist theory of education. The concern of virtue ethics, in spite of posing as ethics of agent and its stress on virtues as source of moral actions, is not reached to the origin in mind. On the other hand, according to the Neo-Confucianistic view, moral education should aim at cultivating the primordial mind or mind in its original nature [心性] as the inner source of morality in its true sense. If Korean society of our time is confronted with the spillover problem of private ethics as a result of the absence of public ethics, this needs to be interpreted in the light of cultivating the primordial mind as a radical aim of moral education.
