장소 특정성 회복을 통한 실경공연의 지속가능한 발전 방안 연구: 도시 정체성 및 로컬 브랜딩 관점에서

국문 초록

본 연구는 실경공연의 장소 특정성 요소를 활용한 지속가능한 발전 전략과 로컬 브랜딩 강화 요건을 탐색한다. 실경공연은 전통적인 공연장을 벗어나 대중적 인지도가 높은 자연경관이나 역사유적지를 대안공간으로 활용하는 특성으로 인해 관광 활성화 및 로컬 브랜딩에 유용한 것으로 알려져 있으나 국내 실경공연의 경우, 일시적 관심을 끈 이후 대부분 조기 종료되어 그 성과를 가늠할 대상이 되는 공연 및 공연단체가 수적으로 극히 저조할 뿐 아니라 지속적이고 장기적인 공연운영에 필요한 인프라가 미약한 상황이다. 이에 본 연구는 국내 실경공연의 발전 저해 요소 분석 및 개선방안 도출을 목적으로, 관련 문헌연구 및 자체 현장조사를 통해 국내 실경공연이 도입된 2000년대 초기부터 현재까지 국내 실경공연 실태를 고찰하고 그를 토대로 실경공연의 장소특정성 회복을 통한 지역 정체성 구현 및 로컬 브랜딩 강화 방안을 제안한다. 연구 결과, 우리나라 실경공연의 성과 부진을 가져온 가장 큰 요인은 첫째, 지속적이고 일관된 사업수행에 필요한 안정적인 공연예술경영 인프라와 시스템의 부재를 들 수 있다. 둘째, 실경공연의 무대 배경이 된 장소(지역)의 고유성을 재현하는 대신 공연효과, 무대장치 등 시각적 볼거리에 치중한 실경공연의 본질에 대한 인식 부족을 들 수 있다. 본고는 이에 대한 개선책으로 첫째, 지역 기반 전문공연예술단체 혹은 지역 공동체가 실행주체가 되어 실경공연을 지역공동체의 문화자산으로 가꾸어가는 ‘장소애’가 선행되어야함을 강조한다. 둘째, 장소의 고유성과 역사성이 기반이 된 ‘장소특정성’을 고려한 독창적인 로컬콘텐츠 발굴의 필요성을 제안한다. 결론적으로, 실경공연은 공연과 장소의 상호 맥락을 중시하고 해당 장소에서만 가능한 예술적 경험을 제공하는 '장소 특정성'을 핵심가치로 삼을 때 지속성과 일관성, 연속성을 갖는 로컬공연콘텐츠로서 공동체의 정체성 확립과 단합에 기여할 뿐 아니라 타 지역과 차별성을 갖는 로컬 브랜딩 강화의 핵심 수단이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This study examines sustainable development strategies for real-scenery performances through the restoration of site-specificity and identifies key conditions necessary for strengthening local branding. Real-scenery performances, which utilize natural landscapes or historical sites as alternative performance venues, are widely regarded as effective cultural assets for tourism promotion and local identity-building. However, in Korea, most productions have ended shortly after receiving initial public attention, resulting in a limited number of long-standing examples. The lack of stable infrastructure and management systems further restricts the sustainability of this sector. Drawing on a review of relevant literature and original field research, this study analyzes the development of Korean real-scenery performances from their emergence in the early 2000s to the present. It identifies two primary obstacles to their long-term growth: (1) the absence of consistent and professional arts management systems, and (2) insufficient understanding of the core principles of real-scenery performance, leading many productions to prioritize visual spectacle rather than authentically representing the unique characteristics of the performance site. To address these issues, the study proposes two strategies: first, fostering “place-affection” by enabling local professional companies or community groups to cultivate real-scenery performances as community-based cultural assets; and second, developing original local content grounded in site-specificity that reflects the identity and historical context of the site. The findings suggest that when real-scenery performances embrace site-specificity—emphasizing the interplay between performance and place—they can achieve sustainability and continuity while reinforcing community identity and con『tributing to differentiated local branding.
