가족돌봄청년의 생애과업 수행 전략 : 재편과 단념의 경계에서

국문 초록

본 연구는 가족 내 돌봄을 수행하는 청년들이 제한된 자원과 열악한 환경 속에서 돌봄과생애과업을 어떻게 병행하거나 포기하는지를 탐색하였다. 연구 참여자는 청년기에 부모, 조부모, 형제자매 등을 돌본 경험이 있는 21명이며, 반구조화된 심층면접을 통해 수집한 자료를Strauss and Corbin(1998)의 근거이론 절차에 따라 개방코딩, 축코딩, 선택코딩의 과정을 거쳐 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 돌봄 수행과 생애과업 조율을 위한 전략은 ‘재편 전략’과 ‘단념 전략’이라는 두가지 유형으로 도출되었다. ‘재편 전략’은 학업, 취업, 관계 형성 등의 생애과업을 조정하거나변경함으로써 돌봄과 병행하려는 시도를 의미한다. 반면, ‘단념 전략’은 생애과업 자체를 유보하거나 포기하고 돌봄에 우선순위를 두는 선택을 뜻한다. 이들 전략은 겉으로는 주체적인 행위처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 사회적 자원의 부재와 제도의 한계 등 구조적 제약 속에서 선택된생존 전략으로, 장기적으로는 지속 가능성이 낮고 생애 전반에 부담을 초래할 가능성이 크다. 본 연구는 가족돌봄청년의 전략이 단지 개인의 의지나 선택에 기반한 것이 아니라, 사회구조와의 교차작용 속에서 형성된 결과임을 보여준다. 이를 통해 가족돌봄청년의 행위를 구조-행위 이론적 관점에서 해석하며, 향후 정책적 개입이 단순한 지원을 넘어 구조적 불균형을 완화하는 방향으로 설계되어야 함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study explores how young adults who undertake caregiving within their families manage or forgo their own life-course tasks under conditions of limited resources and adverse environments. The participants were 21 individuals who had experience caring for parents, grandparents, or siblings during their youth. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Strauss and Corbin’s (1998) grounded theory approach, following the steps of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The analysis identified two main types of strategies in coordinating caregiving and life-course pursuits: “restructuring strategies” and “relinquishing strategies.” Restructuring strategies involve attempts to adjust or modify educational, career, or relational goals to accommodate caregiving duties. In contrast, relinquishing strategies refer to the postponement or abandonment of such life goals in favor of prioritizing caregiving. Although these strategies may appear agentic, they are in fact survival responses shaped by structural constraints such as lack of social resources and institutional support. These findings suggest that the strategies of young carers are not merely rooted in personal will or choice but are formed through interactions with broader social structures. This study interprets the practices of young carers through a structure-agency lens and highlights the need for policy interventions that go beyond individualized support to address the structural inequalities underlying caregiving conditions.
