집중적 양육방식의 현재적 변용과 양가성: 밀레니얼 세대 중상층 부모 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 밀레니얼 세대(1980년대생) 중상층 부모들의 양육실천과 관련 생애경험을 가족사회학적으로 분석한다. 특히 이들의 양육실천을 라루의 집중적 양육방식 개념을 중심으로생애과정 관점과 연계하여 탐구한다. 이를 위해 교육열이 강한 수도권 신도시 지역에 거주하는 밀레니얼 세대 중상층 부모 13명을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 연구참여자들은개인주의 성향이 강한 밀레니얼 세대의 특성을 반영하여 자녀의 자율성과 행복, 개인적 성향을 강조하면서도, 동시에 한국사회의 강력한 교육열과 중상층의 계급 재생산 압력으로 인해학업 성취와 미래의 성공에 대한 기대를 포기하지 못하는 양가적 태도를 보였다. 흥미롭게도이러한 집중적 양육방식은 부모 자신의 성장 지역과 유년기 양육 경험에 따라 두 가지 유형으로 분기하며 새롭게 전유되고 있음을 확인하였다. 어린 시절 교육열이 강한 지역에서 성장한부모들은 자녀의 학업 성취를 강조하는 이전 세대의 양육방식을 계승하면서도 이를 개인주의적 맥락에서 재해석하고 있으며, 상대적으로 교육열이 낮은 지역 출신 부모들은 체험 중심의집중적 양육방식을 통해 새로운 형태의 문화자본 축적을 추구하고 있었다. 이러한 양육방식의 형성과 지속에는 성장지역에서의 생애경험이 중요한 ‘동네효과’로 작용하고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 분석을 통해 한국 사회 밀레니얼 세대 부모의 집중적 양육방식이 교육열, 개인주의적 가치관 그리고 계급 재생산 전략이 복합적으로 얽혀 나타나는 다층적 현상임을 밝혔다. 이는 한국의 가족 변화가 서구의 개인화 이론이나 기존의 교육열 논의로 온전히설명될 수 없음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study conducts a family sociological analysis of the parenting practices and related life experiences of upper-middle-class millennial parents (born in the 1980s). Specifically, it explores their parenting practices by connecting Lareau’s concept of intensive parenting with life course perspectives. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 upper-middle-class millennial parents residing in new towns in the Seoul metropolitan region known for strong educational fervor. The research participants exhibited ambivalent attitudes, emphasizing their children’s autonomy, happiness, and individual characteristics while reflecting the individualistic tendencies of the millennial generation. Simultaneously, they were unable to abandon expectations for educational achievement and future success due to Korea’s strong educational fervor and upper-middle-class pressure for class reproduction. Interestingly, this intensive parenting was found to diverge into two distinct types and be newly appropriated based on parents’ own growth regions and childhood parenting experiences. Parents who grew up in regions with strong educational fervor inherit previous generations’ parenting methods that emphasize children’s educational achievement while reinterpreting them within an individualistic context. In contrast, parents from regions with relatively lower educational fervor pursue new forms of cultural capital accumulation through experience-centered intensive parenting approaches. The formation and persistence of these parenting are significantly influenced by life experiences in their growth regions, functioning as important ‘neighborhood effects’. Through this analysis, this study reveals that the intensive parenting practices of millennial parents in Korean society represent a multi-layered phenomenon where educational fervor, individualistic values, and class reproduction strategies are complexly intertwined. This suggests that changes in Korean family dynamics cannot be fully explained by Western individualization theories or traditional discussions of educational fervor alone.
