後百濟와 後唐 간의 對外交涉에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 925년 후당으로부터 책봉을 받은 후백제 견훤의 책봉호를 분석하고, 후백제의 외교 전략과 대외교섭 양상을 검토하였다. 견훤의 책봉호는 새로 받은 직인 ‘책수(策授)’와 기존의 직을 습봉(襲封)한 ‘의전(依前)’으로 구성되어 있다. 이 중 ‘책수’는 733년 이래 통일신라가 당으로부터 제수받았던 책봉호와 유사한 형식이었다. 반면 ‘의전’은 그것과는 이질적인 형식이었다. 따라서 후당은 예(例)에 따라 후백제에게 ‘책수’에 해당하는 부분만 책봉하였고, ‘의전’에 해당하는 부분은 견훤의 기존 자서를 인정해준 것에 가깝다고 판단하였다. 다음으로 후백제와 후당 간에 이루어진 조공·책봉 관계가 중국 측 사서에서 누락된 이유에 관하여 추적해보았다. 그 결과 후백제와 후당 간의 외교관계는 안정적으로 지속되지 않았다고 판단하였다. 실제로 후백제는 후당과의 조공·책봉 관계를 형성하였음에도 거란과의 교섭을 시도하였으며, 경애왕 살해 이후에는 오월과의 친분을 이용하여 고려에 대응하는 외교 전략을 구사하기도 했다. 이러한 후백제의 외교 노선 변화는 후당 황제의 피살과 발해의 멸망 등 급변한 동아시아의 정세에 따른 능동적 대응이었다. 하지만 이로 인해 후백제와 후당 간의 관계가 악화되었으며, 사신 파견의 주체조차 명확히 기록되지 않는 적대적 교섭 대상이 되었다고 판단하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the appointment titles(冊封號) conferred upon Gyeon Hwon(甄萱) of Later Baekje(後百濟) by the Later Tang(後唐) in 925, and examines the diplomatic strategies and external negotiation patterns of Later Baekje. Gyeon Hwon’s appointment titles consisted of a newly granted office, ‘Chaeksu(策授)’, and a previously held office, ‘Uijeon(依前)’, which was inherited by succession. It is judged that the Later Tang, following precedent, only granted the portion corresponding to ‘Chaeksu’, and the portion corresponding to ‘Uijeon’ was not a newly conferred title, but rather an acknowledgment of the titles Gyeon Hwon had previously assumed on his own. Next, this study investigates the reasons for the absence of records concerning the Cefeng(冊封) exchanges between Later Baekje and the Later Tang. As a result, it was concluded that the diplomatic relationship between Later Baekje and Later Tang was not stable and continuous. In fact, even after forming a tributary and investiture relationship with Later Tang, Later Baekje attempted to negotiate with Khitan, and following the assassination of King Gyeongae(景哀王), it pursued a diplomatic strategy of using its friendly ties with WuYue(吳越) to counter Goryeo(高麗). This shift in Later Baekje's diplomatic course was an active response to the rapidly changing political situation of East Asia, including the assassination of the Later Tang emperor and the fall of Balhae(渤海). However, this led to a deterioration in the relationship between Later Baekje and the Later Tang, and it is assessed that Later Baekje became a hostile counterpart in diplomatic negotiations, to the extent that the principal agent of envoy dispatch was not even clearly recorded.
