국문 초록

This study examines common errors in the conversion of monetary values that occur during the translation of classical Japanese texts and explores potential solutions. First, it examines how the coexistence and exchange of three types of currencies—gold coins, silver coins, and copper coins—led to the use of various monetary units in Japan, resulting in confusion and errors in value conversion. The study also highlights that the hybrid nature of Japan’s monetary system, which incorporates both base-4 and base-10 systems, increases the likelihood of mistranslation during the conversion process. Second, it reveals how the choice of reference commodity for value conversion—such as rice or gold—can result in values being significantly over- or underestimated. As a solution, the paper proposes to use at least two different reference commodities (e.g., gold coins and rice) in parallel to convert monetary values and then adjust them using the median value. Additionally, it addresses the issue of currency depreciation over time, which may mislead modern readers, and suggests the need to provide correction tables so that readers can recalibrate values independently.

영문 초록

本稿では、日本古典の解読において頻繁に発生する貨幣価値の換算の誤りと、その信頼性を強化する代案について考察した。 第一に、金貨·銀貨·銭貨という三貨が相互に交換される過程において、多様な貨幣単位が利用されており、それに起因する混同が貨幣価値換算の誤りを引き起こすことを確認した。また、日本の貨幣体系が四進法と十進法の複合的な構造を持つことから、換算の過ちが十分に生じ得ることが確認できた。 第二に、貨幣価値の換算の基準となる品目の価格によって、換算値が過度に高くなったり、低くなったりする問題を確認した。これに対応するため、本稿では金貨と米など、複数の品目を併用して貨幣価値を換算し、その中央値を用いて補正する方法を提案する。さらに、時代の経過とともにインフレによって貨幣価値がだんだん下がっていく問題が、未来の読者に誤解を与え兼ねないことから、読者自ら貨幣価値の換算をし直し、再補正する手段を提供することを提案する。
