시사 다큐멘터리와 AI 영상의 조우: MBC “내란수괴 혐의, 그는 무엇을 노렸나” 편을 중심으로

국문 초록

2025년 1월 7일 방영된 MBC 제1447회, ｢내란수괴 혐의, 그는 무엇을 노렸나｣는 생성형 AI 영상이 실제방송 시사 다큐멘터리의 제작에 본격 도입된 사례다. 해당 방송은 계엄령과 관련한 내용을 다루며, 계엄이 실제로 시행되었다면 어땠을까 설정하고, 이러한 가상 상황을 AI 영상으로 재현하였다. 본 연구는 이 사례를 중심으로, 생성형 AI 영상이 시사 다큐멘터리 제작 과정에 도입될 때 어떤 서사적·미학적 효과를 거두면서도 기존 산업 시스템과 긴장관계를 형성하는지 분석하고자 한다. 이를 위해 해당 프로젝트에 참여한 MBC PD와 AI 영상 제작을 담당한 MBC AI 전략자회사의 대표를 심층 면접한 자료와 영상 제작 과정에서 실제 사용된 실무 자료 등을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 제작 워크플로우는, 기존의 재연, 애니메이션 외주 방식과 유사하면서도, AI 영상은 부분수정이 불가하기 때문에 프롬프팅의 조정을 통한 반복적 생성을 시도해야 하는 특징을 보였으며, 디자이너가 후보정 툴을 활용하여 AI 이미지의 한계를 보완했다. 이때 각 작업 순간마다 후보정과 AI 생성을 어떻게 조합할지 판단해야 하는 노동이 수반되기도 했으며, 이러한 협업과정에서 제작진은 AI 영상에 대한 고유한 평가 기준을 정립했는데, 이는 다음과 같다: 1) 사실성 2) 물리적·사회적 현실과의 정합성 3) 연속성 4) 극적 몰입감. 이러한 요건은 방송 환경, 다큐멘터리 장르, 현 AI 기술 수준을 반영한 것으로, 이 기준이 충족될 때 AI 영상은 시사 다큐멘터리에 성공적으로 적용될 수 있었다. 나아가 AI 영상 기술은 다큐멘터리의 서사적, 미학적 가능성을 크게 확장시킨다. 미래 재난, 디스토피아, 대체 역사 등 기존 다큐멘터리에서 시각화하기 어려웠던 내용을 설득력 있게 재현할 수 있는 가능성이 열리고, 물리적으로 접근 불가능하거나 존재하지 않는 시공간, 인물, 관점을 구현해 다큐멘터리의 재현 범위를 넓힐 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the integration of generative AI video in the production of current affairs documentaries, focusing on MBC's PD Notebook Episode 1447, “Suspect of Insurrection, What Was He Aiming For?”, aired on January 7, 2025. This episode notably employed AI-generated footage to visualize hypothetical scenarios related to martial law, specifically exploring “what if” martial law had actually been implemented. The research analyzes how generative AI video, when introduced into current affairs documentary production, achieves narrative and aesthetic effects while simultaneously creating tensions with existing industry systems. To achieve this, the study conducted in-depth interviews with the MBC producer involved in the project and the CEO of MBC's AI strategy subsidiary responsible for AI video production. It also analyzed work materials used during the video production process. The findings reveal that while the production workflow shared similarities with traditional re-enactment, AI video's inability for partial modification necessitated iterative generation through prompt adjustments. Designers compensated for AI image limitations by utilizing post-production tools. This process often involved the labor-intensive decision-making of how to combine manual correction with AI generation at each stage. Through this collaborative process, the production team established unique evaluation criteria for AI video, centering on factual accuracy, consistency with physical and social reality, continuity, and cinematic intensity. These criteria reflected the constraints of the broadcasting environment, the requirements of the documentary genre, and the current state of AI technology. When these criteria were met, AI video was successfully applied to current affairs documentaries. Furthermore, AI video technology expands the narrative and aesthetic possibilities of documentaries. It allows for compellingly visualizing content previously difficult to portray in traditional documentaries, such as future disasters, dystopian scenarios, or alternative historical narratives. Moreover, it enables the depiction of physically inaccessible spatio-temporal settings, characters, and perspectives, thereby broadening the scope of documentary representation.
