국문 초록

본 연구는 외로움과 사회적 고립이 정신건강에 미치는 영향을 탐색하고, 외로움과 사회적 고립으로 인한 정신건강 어려움 극복을 지원하기 위한 근거 마련을 목적으로 수행하였다. 이를 위해 2021년 정신건강 실태조사 자료를 활용하여 5,098명을 외로움 인식 여부에 따라 집단을 분류하고, 각 집단의 특성을 SPSS 25.0 프로그램을 사용하여 분석하였다. 외로움 인식 여부에 따른 집단 간 차이를 비교하고, 각 집단의 주요 변수가 정신건강에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 외로운 집단과 외롭지 않은 집단의 인구통계학적 특성, 우울, 알코올 중독, 자살은 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 둘째, 외롭지 않은 집단의 외로움과 사회적 고립은 우울, 알코올 중독에 유의미한 영향을 나타내었다. 셋째, 외로운 집단의 외로움과 사회적 고립은 우울, 알코올 중독, 자살에 유의미한 영향을 나타내었다. 즉, 외로움과 사회적 고립은 정신건강 어려움에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인으로 이를 대응하기 위한 정책과 실천적 함의를 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to understand how loneliness and social isolation effect mental health. These approaches help relieve loneliness and social isolation. Data from the 2021 Mental Health survey, which included 5.098 participants, were used for this purpose. We categorized them into lonely and non-lonely groups and examined the characteristics of each group. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 25.0 Program. The research findings are as follows. First, there were significant differences in demographics, depression, alcoholism, and suicide between the lonely and non-lonely groups. Second, the non-lonely group’s loneliness and social isolation are associated with and increased risk of depression and alcoholism. Third, the lonely group’s loneliness and social isolation are associated with and increased risk of depression, alcoholism, and suicide. In other words, loneliness and social isolation were major predictors of mental health problems. Based on these findings, policy and practical suggestions for addressing loneliness and social isolation in our society are discussed.
