국문 초록

타자 이해가 원칙 상 불가능하다는 사실이 아니라 가능하리란 선험을 전제로 타인에 대한 공감이 능력처럼 과잉 요구되는 성과사회에서, 타자의 고통과 정체성 이해에 공감피로와 감정소진을 경험한 현대인들의 탈공감·반공감이 가속되고 있다. 따라서 낯선 타자의정체성과 역사 깊이 이해하기를 기대해 불충분한 앎에의 불안을 가중하기보다, 자기와 현실적으로 관계 없다 생각되는 대상에 거리를 두고 ‘말 걸기’를 우선 해보는 공감 방법이 요청된다. 이에 본고는 ‘은유’로 한하운의 시 읽기를 예시하며 그 방법론을 제시한다. 먼저 은유가단순한 수사적 기교가 아니라 하나의 텍스트이자 그 세계란 이해를 바탕으로 독자와 텍스트의 만남을 두 은유-세계의 마주침으로 본다. 이때 독자가 두 은유-세계의 ‘구조적 닮음’ 을 발견하고 그 ‘위상동형성’을 해석함으로써 자신과 타자 사이의 발견된 상관성에 공명한다면, 그는 공감을 수행한다고 할 수 있다. 가령 한하운 시의 중요 포에틱딕션인 ‘길 없음’ 의 정동이 성원권의 문제가 얽힌 세계의 구조적 효과인바, 독자는 그것과 자기 삶의 ‘길’과의 닮음을 해석해보며 동일성이 아닌 차이의 관점에서 타자와의 관계를 새로 구성해가며이에 공감할 수 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

In contemporary performance-oriented societies, empathy toward others is not merely encouraged but excessively demanded as a kind of competence, grounded not in the impossibility but in the a priori possibility of understanding Others. As a result, de-empathy and anti-empathy accelerate among individuals facing empathic fatigue and emotional exhaustion while trying to comprehend others’ pain and identity. Rather than heightening anxiety by expecting deep understanding of unfamiliar others’ identity and history, this paper proposes alternative empathy: initiating ‘addressing’ those seemingly unrelated to oneself while maintaining distance. To illustrate, the paper examines reading Han Ha-un’s poetry through the lens of ‘metaphor’. Metaphor is understood not as a rhetorical device but as text and world in itself; the encounter between reader and text becomes that of two metaphorical worlds. When the reader discovers ‘structural resemblance’ between these and interprets their ‘topological homeomorphism,’ resonance emerges in the correlation between self and Other—constituting an act of empathy. For instance, the affect of “pathlessness,” a key diction in Han’s work, is structurally related to issues of membership and exclusion. By interpreting this motif in relation to “paths” in their own world, readers may reconstruct their relationship with the Other from the perspective of difference rather than identity, enabling a renewed form of empathy.
