본 연구는 전공자율선택제로 입학한 대학생들이 대학생활 적응 과정에서 경험하는 심리적·정서적어려움과 이를 극복하는 구체적 과정 및 행동전략을 심층적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 전공자율선택제로 입학한 대학생 10명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하고, 수집된 자료는 체계적 근거이론(Systematic Grounded Theory, 유기웅, 2022)에 따라 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 학생들은 대학 입학 초기전공 미결정 상태에서 정체성 혼란과 소속감 부족 등의 심리적 어려움을 경험하였으며, 대학에서 제공하는 공식적 지원 프로그램이 지나치게 일반적이고 형식적이어서 실질적이고 개인적인 요구를 충분히반영하지 못하고 있었다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 학생들은 선배 및 또래와 같은 비공식적 관계망을적극적으로 활용하였으며, 이를 통해 실질적 정보 제공, 심리적 안정, 정서적 지지 및 소속감 형성과같은 긍정적 효과를 얻었다. 특히, 학생들이 자기주도적 전공 탐색 과정을 통해 점진적으로 자기정체성을확립해가면서 초기의 부정적 경험이 학업 몰입과 심리적 성장으로 전환되는 ‘전공 미로 탈출하기’라는핵심 범주가 도출되었다. 본 연구는 전공자율선택제 학생들의 대학생활 적응과정을 단순한 전공 선택의문제로 축소하지 않고, 심리적·사회적 관점에서 복합적으로 분석하여 이론적 이해를 높였으며, 대학의공식 프로그램과 비공식적 관계망의 연계 및 통합적 운영에 대한 실질적 시사점을 제공하였다. 향후연구에서는 본 연구에서 제시한 지원 방안의 실효성에 대한 구체적이고 경험적인 검증이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study aims to deeply analyze the psychological and emotional challenges experienced by college students admitted through the Autonomous Major Selection System (AMSS) during their adjustment to university life, as well as their specific coping strategies and adaptive processes. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 college students admitted through AMSS, and the collected data were analyzed according to the Systematic Grounded Theory approach (Ryu, 2022). The results indicated that students experienced psychological difficulties such as identity confusion and lack of belonging due to their initially undecided majors. Moreover, university-provided official support programs were found to be overly general and formal, failing to meet students' practical and individual needs. To overcome these issues, students actively utilized informal networks, such as senior peers and classmates, gaining practical information, psychological stability, emotional support, and a sense of belonging. Notably, the core category derived was “escaping the maze of choosing a major,” describing the complex and profound process in which students gradually established their self-identity through self-directed major exploration, transforming initial negative experiences into positive outcomes such as academic engagement and psychological growth. This study contributes theoretically by addressing university adaptation issues comprehensively from psychological and social perspectives, rather than simplifying them as merely a problem of choosing a major. It also provides practical implications for the integrated operation and connection between universities' official programs and informal networks. Future studies should empirically verify the effectiveness of the proposed support strategies.
