북제(北齊)를 건국한 발해고씨와 고구려의 관계

국문 초록

중국 남북조 때 북제(北齊)(550~577)를 건국한 고양(高洋)은 발해고씨(渤海高氏)다. 발해군 수현(蓚縣) 출신의 고씨 중에는 역사에 큰 족적을 남긴 인물들이 많다. 북제 황실을 장악한 고양 일가를 비롯해서 북위(北魏) 세종 선무제의 외삼촌으로서 북위 조정을 장악한 고조(高肇) 일가도 발해고씨다. 북연(北燕)을 건국한 황제 고운(高雲)은 당초 후연(後燕) 황제 모용보(慕容寶)로부터 왕성(王姓)인 모용씨를 하사받았으나 북연 건국 후 본래의 성씨(姓氏)인 고씨로 돌아갔다. 고연이 즉위하자 고구려 광개토대왕은 사신을 보내 종족(宗族)의 예를 베풀었는데 종족은 곧 같은 혈통을 가졌음을 의미한다. 북위 조정을 장악한 고조 일가는 한때 고구려로 망명했고, 고운도 고구려 출신인데서 알 수 있는 것처럼 고구려와 밀접한 관계를 갖고 있었다. 중국의 『세본(世本)』 등의 사료들은 발해고씨의 뿌리를 신농씨(神農氏)의 후손으로서 주(周)왕조 때 초기 제(齊)나라를 건국한 강상(姜尙)이라고 설명하고 있다. 한국의 『삼국사기』는 고운의 뿌리를 중국 오제시대(五帝時代) 전욱(顓頊) 고양씨(高陽氏)라면서 이 때문에 고씨(高氏)를 성씨로 삼았다고 말하고 있다. 신농씨와 고양씨는 모두 동이족(東夷族)이라는 공통점을 갖고 있지만 그 계보는 조금 다르다. 신농씨의 후손인 발해고씨와 고양씨의 후손인 고운 등이 모두 고구려를 모국(母國)으로 여긴 것은 이들의 뿌리를 추적하는 중요한 단서가 될 수 있을 것이다. 이를 통해 고구려를 건국한 고씨뿐만 아니라 동이족의 후예로써 중원(中原) 왕조들에서 각축한 발해고씨들의 역사를 보다 깊고 다양하게 연구한다면 그간 묻혀왔던 중원 동이족 역사 연구에 새로운 지평이 열릴 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Goyang (高洋), who founded the Northern Qi(北齊:550-577) during the Southern and Northern Dynasties of China, is a member of the Balhae Go clan (渤海高氏). Among the Go clan from Suhyeon (蓚縣) in Balhae-gun, there are many figures who left great traces in history. The Goyang clan, who took control of the Northern Jei imperial family, as well as the Gojo (高肇) clan, who took control of the Northern Wei(北魏) court as the maternal uncle of Emperor Sejong Xuanwu of Northern Wei, are also members of the Balhae Go clan. Emperor Goun (高雲), who founded the Northern Yan (北燕), initially received the royal surname Murong from Emperor Murong Bao (慕容寶) of Later Yan (後燕), but after the founding of Northern Yan, he returned to his original surname Go. When Goun ascended the throne, King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo sent an envoy to pay tribute to the clan, which means that they had the same bloodline. The Gojo family, who controlled the Northern Wei court, once fled to Goguryeo, and as can be seen from the fact that Goun was also from Goguryeo, they had a close relationship with Goguryeo. Historical records such as China's 『Sebon (世本)』 explain that the root of the Balhae Go clan is Jiang Shang (姜尙), a descendant of Shennong (神農氏), who founded the state of Qi (齊) in the Zhou Dynasty(周王朝). Korea's 『Samguk Sagi (三國史記)』 states that Goun's root is from the Gaoyang clan (高陽氏) of Jeonwook 顓頊) during the Five Emperors Period (五帝時代) of China, and that this is why he adopted the Go clan (高氏) as his surname. Both the Shennong clan and the Gaoyang clan share the commonality of being Dongyi tribe, but their genealogy is slightly different. The fact that the Balhae Go clan, the descendants of Shennong, and the Goun clan, the descendants of the Goyang clan, both considered Goguryeo as their mother country could be an important clue for tracing their roots. If we study the history of the Balhae Go clan, who were descendants of the Dongyi tribe and fought among the Central Plains dynasties, as well as the Go clan that founded Goguryeo, in a more in-depth and diverse way, it could open up new horizons for the study of the history of the Central Plains Dongyi tribe that has been buried so far.
