국문 초록

요녕성 요양시 동쪽 석성산에 위치한 연주성(燕州城)은 고구려 산성으로 성벽의 보존 상태가 양호하고 회백색 석회암으로 축조된 외형으로 인해 백암성(白巖城)으로 비정되었다. 백암성은 『삼국사기』, 『자치통감』, 『구당서』 등 문헌에 대규모 전투가 벌어진 군사 요충지로 기록되어 있으며 바닷가와 가까운지리적 위치를 전제로 하고 있다. 반면, 요양 석성산에 있는 연주성은 내륙 깊숙이 위치하고 성의 구조나 입지, 유물 출토 양상 등에서 문헌 속 백암성과 현격한 차이를 보인다. 이러한 비정의 오류는 일제 반도사관의 영향과 중국의동북공정 및 국내 식민사학계의 안일한 연구결과의 연장선상에서 발생한 것이다. 본 연구는 문헌과 고고학적 분석을 바탕으로 연주성이 백암성이 될 수없는 이유를 밝히고 현 요양시 석성자산에 위치한 고구려성의 대안적 기능으로서 제의시설 혹은 천문관측의 장소로 사용했을 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Yanzhou Fortress (燕州城), located atop Seongseongsan Mountain to the east of Liaoyang City in Liaoning Province, is a well-preserved Goguryeo-era mountain fortress constructed with light gray limestone. Owing to its appearance, it has been conventionally identified as Baekamseong (白巖城). However, historical records such as the Samguk Sagi, Zizhi Tongjian, and Old Book of Tang describe Baekamseong as a strategic military stronghold where large-scale battles occurred, emphasizing its coastal location. In contrast, Yanzhou Fortress lies deep inland, and its structural features, geographical context, and archaeological findings sharply diverge from the descriptions found in these texts. This misidentification stems from the lingering influence of the Japanese colonial historiographical framework, the Chinese Northeast Project, and the uncritical acceptance of these perspectives by segments of Korean academia. This study critically examines literary and archaeological evidence to argue that Yanzhou Fortress cannot be equated with Baekamseong. Instead, it proposes that the fortress, situated on present-day Seongseongsan in Liaoyang, may have served a distinct function—as a ritual site or astronomical observatory within the cultural and religious practices of the Goguryeo state.
