국문 초록

이 논문은 정몽주와 정도전에 대한 15세기 지식인들의 다양한 이해와 해석 양상을 분석한 것이다. 여말선초의 역사적 전환 위에 정몽주는 죽음을 통해 성리학적 이상을 성공적으로 실현한 지식인의 표상으로, 정도전은 이상과 현실의 접점을 모색하였으나 실패한 정치개혁가로 기억되어 왔다. 그러나 이들은 그러한 선택에 앞서 주어진 역사적·정치적 책무를 감내하며 분투한 성리학적 지식인이라는 점에서 공통된 맥락을 지닌다. 이에 따라 정몽주와 정도전을 둘러싼 15세기 지식인들의 인식과 평가가 어떻게 달라지고 변용되었는지를 세밀히 고찰하였다. 먼저 동시대적 정체성을 견지한 변계량과 유방선은 정몽주의 삶과 죽음을 자신의 시대적 책무와 내면적 성찰의 거울로 삼으며, 이념적 삶의 자세에 대한 존모를 보여준다. 이승소, 김종직, 유호인, 남효온은 정몽주의 정치적 선택과 실천 양상을 역사의 변화라는 맥락 속에서 해석하며, 시대의식·공적 사명감·출처관 등의 차원에서 비판적으로 재조명하였다. 신숙주는 정도전의 개혁에 대한 고평과 정치적 좌절을 통해, 정치 현실의 복잡성과 정치에 참여하는 지식인의 책무, 그에 대한 역사적 평가에 대해 자각하였다. 이처럼 정몽주와 정도전은 15세기 지식인들에게 성리학이 통치 이데올로기로 기능하는 과정에서 고찰해야 할 지식인의 도덕적 선택, 공적·경세적 책무와 관련한 자기성찰을 촉진하는 역할을 하였음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes how 15th century Joseon intellectuals interpreted and evaluated Jeong Mong-Ju and Jeong Do-Jeon. Both figures, situated at the crossroads of Neo-Confucian ideals and political realities, embodied the struggles of scholar-officials who endured profound inner conflicts while making consequential decisions. Jeong Mong-Ju became emblematic of a scholar who realized his convictions through martyrdom, while Jeong Do-Jeon was remembered as a political reformer who sought to reconcile ideals with governance. Despite their contrasting choices, both represent the burden of intellectual responsibility amid turbulent times. This research closely examines how perceptions and evaluations of these two figures evolved among 15th century literati. Byeon Gye-Rryang and Yu Bang-Seon, who shared a contemporary sense of identity with Jeong Mong-Ju, regarded his life and death as mirrors for their own historical responsibilities and ethical self-reflection, revealing deep reverence for a principled Neo-Confucian life. Yi Seung-So, Kim Jong-Jik, Yu Ho-In, and Nam Hyo-On interpreted Jeong Mong-Ju’s political choices and actions within the broader context of historical change, critically reevaluating his role in terms of historical consciousness, public duty, and the ethics of political engagement and withdrawal. Shin Suk-Ju, through his positive appraisal of Jeong Do-Jeon’s reformist vision and acknowledgment of his political downfall, recognized the complexity of political realities and the intellectual's responsibility in governance, along with its implications for historical judgment. In sum, Jeong Mong-ju and Jeong Do-Jeon functioned as catalysts for self-examination among 15th century intellectuals, illuminating how Neo-Confucianism operated as a political ideology and prompting reflection on moral choice, public responsibility, and political praxis.
