국문 초록

Concessions of a Mask is a novel published by Kawade Shobo in July 1949, shortly after the Japanese defeat in the Second World War. As has widely been known, the novel established Yukio Mishima as one of the leaders of post-war literature, who had seemingly fallen behind the literary trend of the time. The novel can be said to be a groundbreaking work in that the author not only checked and validated his previous works but made a prognosis for later novels. The main theme of this paper is to confirms the notion of ‘absence’ as contrasted with the concept of existence manifested by light. In order to support this approach, I look into the novel in three different aspects. First, in Salvation from Absence, I consider the process in which the protagonist confirms ‘absence’ through the existence of light and chases the man of light in order to obtain his true identity, or the light of bliss, which he arguably witnessed at the time of his birth. Second, in Manipulation and Abandonment of Memory, I examine the situation where he chases the light in search of his identity, only to find that the whole process was nothing but a reconfirmation of his absence. Finally, I discuss three ‘First Memories.’

영문 초록

仮面の告白』は1949年７月に河出書房から刊行された長編小説である。敗戦となって間もない当時において文学の潮流に乗り後れたような三島由紀夫は、この作品で戦後文学の旗手として位置づけられたことは広く知られているところである。『仮面の告白』はこれまでの自分の文学的活動を確認し検証しながら以後の文学的活動を予見した画期的な作品といえる。 このような性格を持つ『仮面の告白』を論じるにあたり、「光にあらわれた存在性」を通じて「不在」を確認し、「不在からの救済」の部分では生まれた時の光景を見たという至福の光、すなわち自分の明らかな存在性を得るために光の人を追っていく過程、そして「記憶の操作と捨像」に至っては自分の存在性を求めて光に追いついていたが、結局は自分のは自分が不在であるということを確認することに過ぎなかったこと、最後に「三つの最初の記憶」に分けて論じて見たものである。
