국문 초록

In this study, I examine Makoto Ōishi’s representative work, Chocolate War (1965), and offer a new interpretation distinct from previous analyses. This literary work has previously been treated as a story of “conflict between children and adults”, but, alongside the narrative depicting a conflict, there also exists a promotion story about “Mr Kinbē Tanikawa,” the president of “Kinsendō.” In other words, Chocolate War presents two parallel stories: the “war” between the children and Kinsendō, and the promotion of Kinbē Tanikawa. At the end of the work, these two stories merge into the promotion story. This narrative structure is based on the novel’s framework, where the ‘foreword’ and the ‘afterword’ differ from the main text in both time and person. Further, it is supported by the dual nature of the narrator, who at times takes into consideration the children’s inner experiences and at other times describes things in a detached and objective manner. The story of “war” in the novel is for child readers, while the story of the promotion of “Mr Kinbē Tanikawa” is for adults. By highlighting the latter, Chocolate War can be viewed as a unique piece of children’s literature that depicts the development of adults, rather than children.

영문 초록

本研究は大石真の代表作『チョコレート戦争』(1965)について考察を加え、これまでの論考とは異なる新しい解釈を提示するものである。従来、『チョコレート戦争』は「子どもと大人の対立」の物語として捉えられてきたが、作中には対立の物語とは別に「金泉堂」の社長である「谷川金兵衛氏」の出世物語が存在している。つまり『チョコレート戦争』という作品においては、子どもたちと「金泉堂」との「戦争」と、「谷川金兵衛氏」の出世という二つの物語が並立しているのであり、作品の結末部においてその二つの流れは出世物語の方に統合されていくことになる。こうした物語の構成は、同作が「はじめに」と「あとがき」という物語の本体部分とは時間も人称も異なる枠組みを有していることで可能となるのであり、また、時に子どもの内面に即しつつ、また時には子どもから離れて冷静に叙述する語り手の二面性にも支えられている。作中における「戦争」の物語は子どもの読者向けに、「谷川金兵衛氏」の出世物語は大人向けのものであるともいえ、後者に強く光をあてることで、『チョコレート戦争』が子どもではなく、大人の成長を表現したユニークな児童文学作品であることが浮彫りにされる。
