정착민 식민주의로 왜관을 다시 상상하기 - 배길남의 두모포왜관 수사록을 중심으로

국문 초록

오늘날 부산이 형성되고 발전해온 과정을 반드시 국가 단위의 근대화 과정과 연결지어서 서술할 필요는 없을 것이다. 배길남의 『두모포왜관 수사록』은 부산의 역사를 근대 이전의 과거로부터 길어 올리고 있다는 점에서 그 특수성을 발견할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이 소설이 갖는 특성을 정착민 식민주의의 관점에서 살펴봄으로써, 이 소설에서 왜관이 정착민 식민자와 식민지 정부 사이 갈등의 거점으로 나타나고 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 갈등은 ‘변방’이라는 왜관의 위치성에 기반해 있지만, 그 위치성은 정착민 식민자에 의해 전유되고 있었다. 이로부터 제거 또는 추방되는 선주민들은 젠더화된 ‘의리’를 공유하는데 비해, 선주민과 정착민 중 어느 쪽에도 동화될 수 없는 존재인 여성인물 미선은 언제든 왜관 인근을 떠날 수 있는 존재로 그려지고 있다는 점에서 더 높은 수준의 이주 역량을 지닌 존재로 나타난다. 또한 이 소설은 왜관을 근거로 지역에 대한 인종화된 지식 생산이 역사적으로 실재했으며, 이러한 지식에 대한 대항적 지식 생산의 가능성을 지역민들에게 부여하고 있다. 이러한 시도는 단순히 지역사를 다른 관점, 다른 기원에서부터 설명하는 것을 넘어 오늘날 지역을 둘러싼 담론장에서도 주요한 의미를 갖는 것으로 판단된다.

영문 초록

It is not always necessary to describe the formation and development of contemporary Busan solely in connection with the nation-state's modernization process In this context, Bae Gil-Nam's Dumopo Waegwan Investigation Records is particularly noteworthy for drawing history of Busan from its pre-modern past. This study examines the novel's characteristics through the lens of settler colonialism, identifying the Waegwan as a focal point of conflict between the settler colonizers and the colonial government. While this conflict is predicated on the Waegwan's peripheral location, this very location was appropriated by the settler colonizers. Indigenous inhabitants who face displacement or expulsion share a gendered loyalty. In contrast, Misun, a female character who cannot assimilate into either the indigenous or settler communities, is depicted as possessing a higher degree of migratory capacity, capable of leaving the vicinity of the Waegwan at any time. Furthermore, the novel suggests that racialized knowledge production concerning the region historically existed, rooted in the Waegwan, and that local residents are empowered with the potential to produce counter-knowledge against such narratives. This endeavor not only explains local history from a different perspective and origin but also holds significant implications for contemporary discourses surrounding the region.
