Praxeology in the Mosh Pit: Event Promotion and Global Networks in the Indonesian-Korean Metal Scene, 2017-2025

국문 초록

이 논문은 프락세올로지(praxeology, 인간행동학) 이론을 바탕으로 한국과 인도네시아의 메탈 음악 씬(2017-2025)을 민족지학적 접근과 정량적 분석을 통해 살펴본다. 특히 느슨하게 조직된 문화 네트워크 내의 개인들이 신뢰, 호혜성, 자원 배분 등의 전략을 활용해 지속적이고 성공적인 국가 간 협력을 구축하는 과정에 주목한다. 약 8년에 걸친 참여관찰을 통해, 한국의 유일한 현존 메탈 공연 기획사 대표인 이재호(Thumbo Lee)와 인도네시아 최대 규모의 연례 메탈 음악페스티벌인 락 인 솔로(Rock In Solo)의 기획자 스테파누스 아지(Stephanus Adjie)와 같은 핵심 문화 중개자들의 역할을 집중적으로 조명한다. 연구에서는 미제스(Mises)의 ‘목적적 행동(purposeful action)’, 뵘바베르크(Böhm-Bawerk)의 ‘시간선호(time preference)’, 하이에크(Hayek)의 ‘자생적 질서(spontaneous order)’ 개념 등 오스트리아학파 경제 이론을 이용해 국제 공연 투어의 성공적 실행에 필수적인 실질적 의사결정과 물류적 투자 과정을 분석한다. 인도네시아 밴드 데드스쿼드(Deadsquad)와 다운 포 라이프(Down For Life)의 서울 공연, 그리고 한국 밴드 다크 미러 오브 트래지디(Dark Mirror ov Tragedy)의 락 인 솔로 출연 사례를 통해, 중앙 집중적 제도나 통제가 없더라도 분산적 협력을 통해 효과적이고 지속적인 문화 교류가 가능함을 입증한다. 연구 결과로 제시되는 수학적 모델은 공연 관련 비용과 수익성을 구체적으로 산정하고 예측하도록 설계되어, 글로벌 문화 교류의 전략적 기획 및 효율성 증대에 실질적으로 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This article explores the Indonesian-Korean metal music scene (2017-2025), using ethnography and quantitative analysis informed by praxeological theory. It focuses on how individuals in loosely structured networks strategically deploy trust, reciprocity, and resources to facilitate sustained cross-border collaborations. Drawing on eight years of participant observation, the study foregrounds key cultural brokers such as Jae Ho “Thumbo” Lee—founder of Korea’s sole surviving metal booking agency—and Indonesian promoter Stephanus Adjie, organizer of Rock In Solo, one of Indonesia’s largest annual metal festivals. Austrian economic concepts, particularly Mises’s purposeful action, Böhm-Bawerk’s time preference, and Hayek’s spontaneous order, illuminate the practical decisions and logistical investments underlying successful international tours. Case studies of Indonesian bands Deadsquad and Down For Life performing in Seoul, and the Korean band Dark Mirror ov Tragedy playing at Rock In Solo, illustrate how decentralized collaboration thrives without formal institutional control. The resulting model provides a mathematical formula designed to calculate event expenses and predict profitability, facilitating strategic planning and maximizing the effectiveness of global cultural exchanges.
