이주민 밀집지역 함박마을 활동가들의 생애사 연구 - ‘만남’과 ‘대화’를 통한 전환의 경험

국문 초록

본 연구는 이주민 밀집지역인 함박마을에서 활동하는 이주민 지원 활동가들의 생애사를 통해 이들이 어떻게 정체성을 형성하고 실천에 나서게 되었는지를 분석하였다. 특히, 활동가들의 이주민과의 ‘만남’과 ‘대화’ 경험이 삶의 전환을 이끌어내고 실천으로 이어진 과정을 탐색하는 데 초점을 맞추었다. 함박마을은 면적 대비 전국 최대 고려인 밀집지역이나 다양한 국적의 이주민이 거주하며 이주민 복지 분야의 제도적 사각지대와 정책적 대응 미흡으로 민간의 자발적 실천이 필수적인 구조적 맥락을 가지고 있다. 이러한 현장 배경 속에서 활동가들의 생애 경험을 분석하였다. 연구는 함박마을 활동가 3명의 생애사를 Mandelbaum의 생애사 연구방법 및 마르틴 부버의 ‘나-너’ 철학 기반 ‘만남’과 ‘대화’ 개념을 활용하여 분석하였다. 자료는 연구참여자 심층면담, 참여관찰 일지, 문헌자료 등을 통해 수집되었고, 개연적 삼단논법에 기초한 포괄적 분석 절차를 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 활동가들은 ‘다문화경험’과 ‘자아성찰’을 통한 ‘경험적 학습’, 그리고 ‘실천의 기준 형성’ 및 ‘미래관’을 바탕으로 한 ‘지향점 설정’을 통해 활동가로서의 ‘내부적 동기’를 강화하고 정체성을 확립하였다. 더불어 도움이 필요한 이주민, 선배 활동가 등 다양한 타자와의 ‘전환의 계기가 된 만남’과 상대의 언어로 다가가고 먼저 손 내미는 등의 ‘상호적 대화’를 통해 이주민을 동등한 이웃으로 인식하는 ‘내적 변화’를 경험하였고, 이는 센터 설립, 야학 시작 등 ‘실천의 시작’이라는 ‘외적 변화’로 이어졌다. 이러한 활동가들의 실천은 함박마을의 제도적 공백과 같은 구조적 조건 속에서 ‘비공식적 공공성’을 수행하는 형태로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the life histories of migrant support activists working in Hambak Village, a migrant enclave in Incheon, South Korea, to explore how they develop their identities and engage in practice. particularly focused on exploring the process by which activists' experiences of 'encounter' and 'dialogue' with migrants led to life transitions and subsequently to practical action. Hambak Village, while being the area with the largest concentration of Koryo-saram nationwide relative to its area, is also home to migrants of various nationalities and has a structural context where private voluntary efforts are essential due to institutional blind spots and inadequate policy responses in the field of migrant welfare. Against this backdrop, the life experiences of the activists were analyzed. The study analyzed the life stories of three activists in Hambak Village using Mandelbaum's life history research method and Martin Buber's 'I-Thou' philosophy-based concepts of 'encounter' and 'dialogue'. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with participants, participant observation journals, and literature, and analyzed using a comprehensive analysis procedure based on plausible syllogism. As a result of the analysis, the activists strengthened their 'intrinsic motivation' and established their identity as activists through 'learning from experience' via 'multicultural experience' and 'self-reflection', and through 'goal setting' based on 'establishing criteria for practice' and 'vision for the future'. Furthermore, they experienced 'internal change' in recognizing migrants as equal neighbors through 'encounters that became turning points' with various 'Others,' such as migrants in need and senior activists, and through 'mutual dialogue' such as approaching others in their language and reaching out first. This led to 'external change,' signaling the 'beginning of practice,' such as establishing a center or starting a night school. The practical actions of these activists were manifested in the form of performing 'informal publicness' within structural conditions like the institutional void of Hambak Village.
