A Syntactic Study on the Presentation Patterns of Proverbs in Korean Language Textbooks : Focusing on the Patterns of Their Combination with Co-occurrence Expressions

국문 초록

이 연구는 한국어 교재에 수록된 속담과 공기표현의 결합 양상을 통사적 관점에서 분석하고 속담 교육의 발전적 방향 모색을 위한 교육적 시사점을 도출하는 데 목적이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 『서울대 한국어』, 『연세 한국어』, 『재미있는 한국어(고려대)』, 『경희대 한국어』, 『비타민 한국어』 등 한국어 교재 5종을 대상으로 속담과 공기표현의 제시 양상, 사용 빈도, 문법적 특성을 심도 있게 분석하였다. 그 결과, 가장 다양한 속담 공기표현이 제시된 교재는 『서울대 한국어』로 나타났으며, 『연세 한국어』의 경우 양적으로 가장 높은 공기표현 수록 양상을 보였으나 60% 이상이 ‘-다고’형으로 제시되어 공기표현의 균형성과 다양성은 반영되지 않고 있었다. 속담과 가장 높은 빈도로 공기하는 표현은 ‘-다고’, ‘-다더니’, ‘-다는데’ 순으로 나타났으며 이러한 표현들은 속담과 결합하여 주장이나 경험을 강화하는 중요한 문법 장치로 기능함을 확인하였다. 한편 대부분의 교재에서 공기표현과 결합된 속담의 실제적 사용 방식에 대한 명시적 설명이나 체계적인 연습 활동이 충분히 마련되지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이에 본 연구는 교재 분석을 통해 도출된 시사점을 바탕으로 학습자들이 속담과 공기표현의 결합에 초점을 맞추어 속담 사용 방식을 문법적으로 정확히 이해하고 다양한 상황에서 효과적으로 활용할 수 있도록 돕는 교재 구성 방안에 대해 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze the syntactic patterns of how proverbs co-occur with grammatical expressions in Korean language textbooks and to propose pedagogical implications for improving proverb instruction. To this end, five Korean textbooks—Seoul National University Korean, Yonsei Korean, Fun Fun Korean (Korea University), Kyung Hee Korean, and Vitamin Korean—were closely examined in terms of how proverbs and their co-occurring expressions are presented, their frequency of appearance, and their grammatical characteristics. The findings revealed that Seoul National University Korean presented the widest variety of co-occurrence expressions, while Yonsei Korean showed the highest overall frequency. However, over 60% of the expressions in Yonsei Korean were limited to the “-다고” form, indicating a lack of balance and diversity in the types of expressions used. The most frequently used co-occurrence expressions were “-다고,” “-다더니,” and “-다는데,” all of which were found to function as key grammatical devices for reinforcing assertions or reflecting the speaker’s experience when combined with proverbs. Meanwhile, most of the textbooks did not provide explicit explanations or systematic practice activities to guide learners in the actual use of proverbs with these expressions. Based on the pedagogical insights derived from this analysis, this study proposes textbook design strategies that encourage learners to focus on the combination of proverbs and co-occurrence expressions, helping them to develop grammatically accurate understanding and to apply proverbs effectively in various communicative contexts.
