국문 초록

분배 규범은 한 사회의 운영 원리로서 사회 제도를 결정하는 주요 영향 요인이며, 개인적으로는 도덕적 신념과 욕망이 투영된 분배에 관한 개인의 판단 기준의 의미를 갖는다. 본 연구는 능력주의(Meritocracy)가 현대 자본주의 사회를 지배하고 있는 분배 규범으로 정착하게 된 배경을 소개하는 한편, 그것이 공정한 자원과 기회의 배분 규칙을 표방하지만, 그 이면에는 구조적 불평등을 정당화하는 모순을 내재하고 있음을 논의하였다. 또한 청소년이 이와 같은 능력주의를 수용·강화하게 되는 심리를 자존감 유지 기제, 노력 정당화 효과, 계급 의식의 심화 등으로 설명하고, 이를 바탕으로 역차별, 모둠별 평가, 블라인드 채용 등에 대해 이들이 보이는 부정적 태도에 대한 해석을 시도하였다. 또한 손익에 민감한 행동, 낮은 공동체 의식, 수단적 인간관계 등으로 대표되는 청소년의 사회적 행동의 부정적 측면에 대한 이해에 있어서 능력주의의 모순과 그 영향을 고려해야 할 필요성을 제안하였다. 마지막으로 점차 심각해지고 있는 사회적 격차 완화와 우리 사회의 제도와 문화를 지배하는 분배 규칙에 대한 검토를 통해, 자신은 물론 타인과의 관계에서 어려움을 겪고 있는 청소년에 대한 사회적 이해와 지원이 요구됨을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

From a social perspective, distributive norms function as foundational principles that shape the institutional structure of a society, while at the individual level, they represent evaluative standards grounded in moral beliefs and personal desires regarding the allocation of resources. This study explores the historical and ideological background through which meritocracy has become the dominant distributive norm in contemporary capitalist societies. Although meritocracy claims to ensure a fair distribution of resources and opportunities based on individual effort and ability, the study argues that it simultaneously legitimizes structural inequalities. Furthermore, it examines the psychological mechanisms through which adolescents internalize and reinforce meritocratic beliefs—namely, the need to maintain self-esteem, the justification of effort, and the intensification of class consciousness. These mechanisms are used to interpret adolescents’ critical attitudes toward perceived reverse discrimination, group-based assessments, and blind recruitment policies. The study also highlights the necessity of considering the contradictions of meritocracy in understanding the negative aspects of adolescents' social behaviors, such as their heightened sensitivity to costs and benefits, diminished sense of community, and instrumental approach to relationships. Lastly, it calls for greater social awareness and institutional support for adolescents who face difficulties in navigating relationships with others and forming a stable sense of self, emphasizing the need to reexamine the distributive rules embedded in social institutions and cultural norms as a response to widening social disparities.
