국문 초록

｢법장화상전｣은 최치원이 화엄종 제3조 법장의 사상과 생애를 하나의 통일된 서사로 직조한 전기 문학으로, 단순한 인물 전기를 넘어 교학적 사상과 문학적 장치를 함께 갖춘 복합 텍스트이다. 본고는 이 작품이 법장의 저서인 『화엄삼매관』의 十直心을 바탕으로 본문을 十科로 구성하고, 여기에 『춘추좌전』의 三不朽 개념을 접목하여 서사를 전개하고 있음을 주목하였다. 특히 이러한 구성 방식이 화엄 교학의 수행론과 역사적 현실에서의 법장 행적을 유기적으로 결합하고 있음을 확인하였다. 제2장에서는 十直心과 十科의 대응 양상을 긴밀한 대응, 상징적 대응, 형식적 대응의 세 가지 유형으로 분석하고, 十直心이 단순한 항목 구분이 아니라 수행의 심화를 따라 점층적으로 설계되었음을 밝혔다. 또한 三不朽 개념이 순차적 배열이 아니라 회귀적·나선형 구조로 배치되었다는 점, 그리고 각 과의 분량이 立德에서 立言, 立功으로 갈수록 점차 증가한다는 점을 통해 법장의 수행과 영향력의 확장이 드러나도록 구성되었음을 규명하였다. 제3장에서는 서사 전체의 중심이라 할 수 있는 立功 부분에 주목하여, 제7과에서는 보편적 윤리로서의 효우와 충정 실천을, 제8과에서는 초월적 법력에 의한 사회 구제 사례를, 제9과에서는 교학 정립과 후학 양성을 통해 법장의 화엄종 제3조로서의 위상을 분석하였다. 특히 제8과의 서술 비중과 신이한 사건의 배치는 법장을 영험자로 형상화하려는 최치원의 서사 전략을 잘 보여준다. 이를 통해 ｢법장화상전｣은 화엄 사상에 기반한 수행과 교화의 이상을 문학적 서사로 구체화한 대표적 작품으로 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Biography of Dharma Master Fazang (法藏和尙傳) is a literary biography authored by Choi Chi-won that weaves together the life and thought of Fazang, the third patriarch of the Hwaeom school, into a unified narrative. This work transcends the scope of a simple biographical account, constituting a complex text that integrates doctrinal thought and literary devices. This study focuses on how the text structures its ten main sections (十科) based on the Ten Direct Minds (十直心) from Fazang’s own work, The Contemplation of the Hwaeom Samādhi (華嚴三昧觀), and how it incorporates the concept of the “Three Immortalities” (三不朽) from the Zuo Commentary to the Spring and Autumn Annals (春秋左傳) to unfold its narrative. Chapter Two classifies the correlation between the Ten Direct Minds and the ten sections into three types: close correspondence, symbolic correspondence, and formal correspondence. It reveals that the Ten Direct Minds are not merely categorical divisions but are designed in a progressive sequence reflecting the deepening stages of spiritual cultivation. Furthermore, this chapter demonstrates that the Three Immortalities are arranged not in a linear order but in a recursive and spiral structure. The gradual increase in the volume of text from Establishing Virtue (立德) to Establishing Speech (立言) and Establishing Merit (立功) is shown to reflect the expansion of Fazang's practice and influence. Chapter Three concentrates on the Establishing Merit section, the narrative core of the biography. It analyzes the seventh section, which presents the practice of filial piety and loyalty as universal ethics; the eighth section, which recounts instances of miraculous social salvation through transcendent dharma powers; and the ninth section, which describes Fazang’s establishment of doctrinal systems and education of disciples, thereby affirming his status as the third patriarch of the Hwaeom school. In particular, the narrative weight and strategic placement of miraculous events in the eighth section exemplify Choi Chi-won’s literary strategy to portray Fazang as a numinous figure. Accordingly, The Biography of Dharma Master Fazang can be regarded as a representative literary work that concretizes the ideals of spiritual practice and edification grounded in Hwaeom thought through a literary narrative.
