국문 초록

본 연구는 인구구조의 변화와 경상수지의 관계를 실증분석하였고 기술통계, 상관분석을 바탕으로 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구는 1980년부터 2022년까지 OECD 38개국을 대상으로 분석한 뒤 초고령사회에 진입한 17개국과 나머지 21개국으로 구분하여 추가 분석을 실시하였으며, 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, OECD 38개국을 대상으로 분석한 결과, 기본모형에서 정부지출, 경제성장률, 교역조건, 경제발전도가 이론에 부합하는 결과를 보여주었다. 기존의 선행연구들에서도 확인된 것으로 본 연구에서도 차이를 보이지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 인구변화에 관한 실증분석 결과는 차이를 보였다. 생산가능인구 비율과 고령화 비율이 이론에 부합하지도 않았고, 일부 선행연구와 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 이미 고령화의 진행을 대비하기 위한 이민정책, 생산력 제고 정책, 기술발전 등이 나타난 결과라고 해석할 수 있다. 둘째, 17개 국가에서는 생산가능인구의 증가는 경상수지에 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 반대로 고령화 비율과 유소년 비율의 증가는 경상수지에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 21개 국가에서는 인구구조의 변화를 나타내는 모든 변수가 경상수지와 정(+)의 관계를 보이는 것으로 나타나 초고령사회 진입 국가와 차이를 보이는 것을 알 수 있다. 본 연구는 인구 변화와 경상수지의 관계를 분석하기 위한 것으로 OECD국가를 대상으로 인구구조의 변화에 따른 구분을 하다 보니 자료의 수를 한계로 지적할 수밖에 없다. 고령화가 본격적으로 나타나고 정부의 정책이 나타나기 시작한 이후의 시기에 대한 자료 수가 적어 추가분석이 어려웠다는 점이 한계이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 선행연구의 논의를 함께 규명한다면 양적인 규명에 따른 한계를 보완할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study empirically analyzed the relationship between demographic changes and the current account balance(CA) in OECD countries from 1980 to 2022. An additional analysis was conducted by dividing the sample into 17 countries that have entered a super-aged society and the remaining 21 countries. First, the analysis of OECD countries showed that in the baseline model, government expenditure, economic growth rate, terms of trade produced results consistent with theoretical expectations. However, the empirical findings related to demographic changes differed. The proportions of the working-age population and the elderly population were neither consistent with theoretical predictions nor aligned with some previous studies. Second, in the 17 super-aged countries, an increase in the working-age population was found to have a negative impact on the current account balance, whereas increases in the proportions of the elderly and youth populations positively influenced the CA. However, in the 21 countries, demographic structure variables were found to have a positive (+) relationship with the current account balance, indicating a contrast with countries that have entered a super-aged society. The analysis of the relationship between demographic changes and the CAB underscores the need for continuous updates of the data and further research in this area, given the ongoing nature of demographic transitions.
