국문 초록

본 연구는 질베르 시몽동(Gilbert Simondon)의 기술 철학을 바탕으로 현대 조각의 개념이 어떻게 확장되고 있는지를 탐구하는 데 목적이 있다. 특히, 인간과 기술적 대상 사이에서 발생하는 다양한 현상을 조각과 예술 생명체의 가변적 형상을 통해 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 기술적 개체가 존재하는 환경에 따라 끊임없이 변화하고 적응할 수 있다는 점을 전제로 하며, 이러한 개념을 필립 파레노(Philippe Parreno)의 작품을 중심으로 고찰한다. 파레노의 작업을 통해 조각이 단순한 물리적 오브제가 아니라, 주변 조건에 따라 변화하는 기술적 개체로 기능함을 살펴본다. 질베르 시몽동은 기술적 개체가 고정된 형태로 존재하는 것이 아니라, 개체화(individuation) 과정을 거치며 지속적으로 변화하는 존재임을 강조하였다. 그의 이론은 현대 조각이 전통적인 조형성과 물질성을 넘어 기술과 결합하여 보다 유동적이고 반응적인 특성을 지니게 되는 방향으로 발전하고 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구에서는 파레노의 《Voices》 전시에 등장하는 주요 작품들을 분석하여, 조각이 기술적 개체로서 다양한 요소와 결합하고 변화하는 과정을 고찰한다. 또한, 그의 작업에서 나타나는 조각의 가변성, 관람자의 개입에 따른 작품의 변화, 그리고 기술적 요소와의 융합이 조각 개념을 어떻게 확장하는지 논의한다. 현대 사회에서 '휴먼이미지'는 인간과 기술적 개체 간의 관계를 시각적으로 재현하고 탐구하는 중요한 개념으로 자리 잡고 있다. ‘기술적 대상’은 AI나 ChatGPT와 같은 통제 불가능한 영역으로서의 대상이 아니라, 인간의 움직임, 감각, 경험이 기술적 매체와 융합하면서, 조각 또한 기존의 물질성을 넘어 보다 유기적이고 반응적인 형태로 진화하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 조각의 변화가 현대 조형예술에서 기술적 개체의 개념을 새롭게 정의하는 데 기여할 수 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 궁극적으로, 본 연구는 현대 조각이 기술과 결합하면서 보다 역동적이고 변형 가능한 존재로 재구성되는 가능성을 조명하며, 조각이 기술적 개체로 기능할 수 있는 새로운 방향성을 모색하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the expansion of the concept of contemporary sculpture based on the technological philosophy of Gilbert Simondon. In particular, it examines the various phenomena that arise between humans and technological objects through the variable forms observed in sculpture and artificial life in art. This study assumes that technological entities continually evolve and adapt depending on their surrounding conditions and investigates this concept through the works of Philippe Parreno. By analyzing Parreno’s work, this research explores the possibility of sculpture functioning not merely as a physical object but as a technological entity that transforms in response to its environment. Simondon emphasizes that technological entities do not exist in fixed forms but undergo continuous transformation through the process of individuation. His theory suggests that contemporary sculpture is evolving beyond traditional notions of form and materiality, integrating with technology to become more fluid and responsive. This study analyzes key works from Parreno’s Voices exhibition to examine how sculpture, as a technological entity, interacts with various elements and undergoes transformation. Additionally, it discusses how the variability of sculpture, audience engagement, and the integration of technological elements contribute to expanding the concept of sculpture. In contemporary society, the concept of “human image” has emerged as a crucial framework for visually representing and examining the relationship between humans and technological entities. This concept goes beyond simple formal representation, incorporating movement, perception, and experience as they merge with technological media to create new expressions. Likewise, sculpture is undergoing a transformation, moving beyond static materiality to embrace more organic and dynamic forms. This study seeks to highlight how these shifts in sculpture contribute to redefining the role of technological entities within contemporary art. Ultimately, this research sheds light on the potential for contemporary sculpture to be restructured as a dynamic and transformative entity through its fusion with technology. It aims to provide new perspectives on the role of sculpture as a technological entity and explore its evolving direction in the context of contemporary art.
