국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 본 연구는 한국어-영어 이중언어 일반 아동과 언어발달지연 아동의 언어적 덩이짓기(chunking) 능력을 비교하고, 언어경험이 덩이짓기 과제 수행에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 방법: 만 4-6세의 한국어-영어 이중언어 일반 아동 23명과 언어발달지연 아동14명을 대상으로 단어목록회상 과제를 실시하였다. 어순(문장어순, 무선어순), 단어 수(3단어, 5단어, 7단어), 언어(한국어, 영어)를 변인으로 설정하고 수행률(정반응률)을 분석하였다. 아동의 부모에게는 이중언어 노출 및 사용 설문지 응답을 요청하였다. 결과: 일반 아동이 언어발달지연 아동보다 높은 수행률을 보였고, 문장어순 조건이 무선어순 조건보다 우수하였다. 단어 수 증가에 따라 수행률은 감소하였으며, 한국어 과제에서 영어보다 수행률이 높았다. 이중언어 경험이 일반 아동의 수행에 긍정적 영향을 미친 반면, 언어발달지연 아동은 동시 노출 시간이 부정적 영향을 주었다. 논의 및 결론: 이 연구는 언어적 덩이짓기 과제가 이중언어 아동의 언어발달 평가에 유용한 도구임을 시사한다. 또한, 언어 경험이 이중언어 아동의 수행에 중요한 영향을 미친다는 점을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the linguistic chunking abilities of Korean-English bilingual typically developing children (TD) and children with language delay (LD). It also examined the impact of language experience on chunking task performance. Chunking, a working memory domain, involves integrating new information with existing knowledge to expand memory capacity. Methods: The study involved 23 bilingual TD children and 14 LD children aged 4 to 6 years. A word-list recall task was conducted, manipulating order (sentence vs. random), word count (3, 5, 7), and language (Korean, English). Parents completed the Bilingual Input and Output Survey. Task performance accuracy, analyzed as the percentage of correct responses, was evaluated using three-way mixed repeated-measures ANOVA and correlation analysis. Results: TD children outperformed LD children, with higher accuracy in the sentence order condition compared to random order. Performance decreased with increasing word count and was better in Korean tasks than in English tasks. Time spent using and being exposed to each language positively influenced TD children’s performance. In contrast, simultaneous exposure to both languages negatively impacted LD children’s performance. Conclusion: Linguistic chunking tasks are valuable for assessing bilingual children’s language development status. Language experience significantly affects chunking abilities, highlighting the need for tailored interventions for bilingual children with language delay.
