근대계몽기 지리교과서 『디구약론(地璆略論)』의 내용과 간행 정보 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 근대계몽기 학부에서 발간한 한글 지리교과서 『디구약론』의 내용 구성과 간행 정보를 고찰 하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 『디구약론』은 국내외에서 대략 11종 정도가 현전하고 있으며, 이들은 모두 정본으로 판단된다. 이 책의 권수제와 권미제에 의하면, 책의 서명은 『디구약론(地璆略論)』으 로 표 기 하 는 것 이 타당하다. 둘째, 『디구약론』은 서문과 발문이 없고, 발간지, 발간 시기, 편찬자 등 간행과 편찬에 대한 표기나 단 서가 전무하며, 지도나 삽화 없이 197개 설명형 문답체 형식으로 구성된 것이 특징이다. 셋째, 책의 내용과 서술 비 중에서 나타나는 가장 큰 특징은 조선 8도에 대한 문답이 59% 정도를 차지하는 조선지리 교과서라는 점이다. 조선 8도는 ‘백두산이 위치한 함경도(무산)’에서 백두대간을 따라 남부 지역으로 향하고(함경도-강원도-경상도), 남부 에서 다시 북부 지방으로 향하는 순(전라도-충청도-경기도-황해도-평안도)으로 독특하게 구성되었다. 서술된 조 선 8도의 지리 정보는 1888년 이후 혹은 1890년대 초기의 것으로 추정된다. 마지막으로, 이화 및 영화 여학당의 교 육과정과 지리교과서에 대한 기록 등을 근거로, 『디구약론』은 기독교 선교사 스크랜튼 여사가 1892년경 이화학 당의 지리교과서로 발간하였고, 1985년 학부에서 채택한 것으로 추정한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the content composition and publication details of the Hangeul geography textbook ｢Diguyakron｣ published by the hakbu in the modern enlightenment period. The main research findings are as follows. First, there are about 11 copies of ｢Diguyakron｣ remaining at home and abroad, all of which are considered authentic. According to the title on the front and back pages of the book, the official title should be recorded as ｢Diguyakron(地璆略論)｣. Second, this textbook has no preface or conclusion, as well as any indications or records regarding the publication place, date, or compiler. It is composed of 197 explanatory questions and answers without maps or illustrations. Third, the most notable feature of the book’s content is that it is a Joseon geography textbook, with 59% of the content dedicated to the eight provinces of Joseon. The description of the eight provinces follows a unique sequence, starting from Hamgyeong-do (Musan), where Baekdusan Mountain is located, moving southward and then back to the north. The geographic information of the eight provinces is estimated to date from after 1888 or the early 1890s. Finally, based on records of the curriculum and geography textbooks from Ewha and Younghwa Girls' School, ｢Diguyakron｣ is presumed to have been compiled and published around 1892 by Christian missionary M.F. Scranton as a geography textbook for Ewha School and later adopted by the Hakbu in 1895.
