문학을 생태적으로 사유하는 방법에 관한 연구 - 「채식주의자」에 나타난 말과 꿈의 네트워크

국문 초록

생태 위기로 인한 전 지구적 파국이 예견되는 시점에서, 문화와 문화의 일종인 문학 역시 물질적 수준을 고려하지 않은 채 자신들의 영역을 주장할 수 없게 되었다. 이에 본고에서는 한강의 단편소설 ｢채식주의자｣를 읽어나가는 과정을 통해 문학을 생태적으로 사유하기 위한 방법에 관해 고찰해 보았다. 작가 스스로도 털어놓았듯이, ｢채식주의자｣는 오해의 소지가 많은 작품이다. 독자들은 작품의 주요 인물인 ‘영혜’가 왜 채식주의자가 되었는지, 왜 자신의 신념을 지킨다는 핑계로 주변 사람들을 불편하게 하는지 이해할 수 없다고 불평했다. 본고는 ｢채식주의자｣에 대한 독자 및 연구자들의 상반된 감상과 해석, 불평들이 인물에 대한 이항대립적 판단으로부터 비롯된다는 가정하에, 그러한 이항대립적 판단의 원천으로 작용하는 구조주의 기호학의 분석 도구를 활용해 ｢채식주의자｣를 읽어나갔다. 이 과정에서 ｢채식주의자｣가 구조주의 기호학에서 활용되는 이항대립적 의미 생산 체계 및 서사 프로그램을 매우 전면적으로 배반하고 있음을 확인하였다. 서사의 표면에 드러나는 주요 인물들 간의 갈등은 주체의 양태 변화와 거의 무관하다는 점에서 서사 분석 및 해석의 최종심급이 될 수 없었으며, 그 대신 비-인간 행위자들이 주체의 양태 변화, 즉 육식에서 비-육식으로의 이행을 유발함을 알게 되었다. 비-인간 행위자와 네트워킹된 ‘영혜’는 인간화된 세계로부터 이접됨으로써 감수자라는 독특한 위상을 드러낸다. 비-인간/물질적인 것에 감응하는 ‘영혜’의 감수자로서의 위상이 ｢채식주의자｣에 대한 오독의 주요 원인이므로, 본고에서는 비-인간/물질적인 것에 초점을 맞추어 ｢채식주의자｣의 읽기 과정을 재검토해 보았다. 이를 통해 ‘영혜’의 발화 단락이 대부분 꿈이나 단속적인 이미지로 이루어져 있으며, 특히 이 단락들이 이탤릭체로 표기되어 있다는 점에 새삼 주목하게 되었다. 이탤릭체로 표기된 ‘영혜’의 발화는 비-인간 행위자와 연결된 감수자의 유폐된 심적 반응이라는 의미를 전달하는 동시에 정체와 이탤릭체라는 시각적 물성의 대조를 통해 독자들의 이항대립적 질서에 대한 믿음과 안정감을 붕괴시킨다. 요컨대 ｢채식주의자｣는 우리의 일반화된 서사 읽기 패턴과 문학적 경험을 그 토대로부터 뒤흔드는, 강력한 정동 장치라 할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

At a time when global catastrophe due to the ecological crisis is predicted, culture and literature, a type of culture, have also become unable to claim their own territory without considering materiality. Accordingly, in this paper, we considered ways to think about literature ecologically through the process of reading Han Kang's short story “The Vegetarian”. As the author himself confessed, “The Vegetarian” is a work that can be easily misunderstood. Readers complained that they could not understand why ‘Young-hye’, the main character of the work, became a vegetarian and why she made people around her uncomfortable under the pretext of protecting her beliefs. This paper reads “The Vegetarian” using the analytical tools of structuralist semiotics, which serve as the source of such binary judgments, under the assumption that readers’ and researchers’ conflicting impressions, interpretations, and complaints about “The Vegetarian” originate from the binary judgments about the characters. In this process, it was confirmed that “The Vegetarian” completely betrays the binary oppositional meaning production system and narrative program used in structuralist semiotics. The conflict between the main characters that appears on the surface of the narrative could not be the final instance of narrative analysis and interpretation because it had little to do with changes in the subject's mode. Instead, it was found that non-human actors caused a change in the mode of the subject, that is, a transition from meat-eating to non-meat-eating. ‘Young-hye’, networked with non-human actors, reveals her unique status as a reviewer by being separated from the humanized world. Since Young-hye's status as a patient who responds to non-human/material things is the main cause of misreading of “The Vegetarian”, this paper reexamines the reading process of “The Vegetarian” focusing on non-human/material things. Through this, I once again drew attention to the fact that most of Young-hye's speech paragraphs consist of dreams or intermittent images, and that these paragraphs are especially written in italics. Young-hye's utterance, written in italics, conveys the meaning of the imprisoned mental reaction of the patient connected to a non-human actors. At the same time, the contrast between the visual materiality of regular font and italics destroys readers' faith and sense of stability in the binary oppositional order. In short, “The Vegetarian” can be said to be a powerful affective dispositif that shakes our generalized narrative reading patterns and literary experiences from their foundations.
