『深齋日記』를 통해 본 근대전환기 深齋 曺兢燮의 지식인 네트워크와 시대적 대응양상

국문 초록

본 연구는 근대전환기를 살았던 深齋 曺兢燮(1873~1933)의 자필일기인 『深齋日記』를 통해 조긍섭의 지식인 네트워크 형성과 시대적 대응 양상을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 『심재일기』는 33년에 걸친 기록으로 조긍섭의 네트워크 구축과 확장 과정, 그것을 통한 시대적 대응의 의미를 밝히는데 매우 주요한 텍스트이다. 이를 고찰하기 위해 일기에 기록된 인물 교류와 지역적 이동을 시기별로 분석하여 조긍섭의 지식인 네트워크가 어떻게 형성되고 변화했는지 살폈다. 그 결과 조긍섭의 네트워크는 세 단계로 발전했음을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 초기 창녕 시기(1898~1903)에는 혈연, 지연, 학맥에 기반한 지역 중심의 네트워크가 형성되었다. 둘째, 1904년 이후에는 밀양, 의령, 인흥 등으로 활동 범위가 확장되며 영남 지역 학자들과의 교류가 활발해졌다. 셋째, 1914년 정산 이주 이후에는 재경지식인, 망명지식인들과의 교류가 이루어지며 네트워크의 질적 도약이 있었다. 특히 1919~1920년 정산서당 건립은 조긍섭이 단순한 은자가 아닌, 지식인 네트워크의 매개자이자 조직자로서 기능했음을 보여준다. 본 연구는 조긍섭의 사례를 통해 근대전환기 유교 지식인의 대응 전략으로서 ‘은거의 역설’을 발견했다. 즉, 표면적으로는 전통적 은거의 형식을 취하면서도 실질적으로는 더 광범위하고 다층적인 지식인 네트워크를 구축하는 적극적 실천이 이루어졌다. 이는 전통과 근대의 단절이 아닌, 연속과 변용을 통한 지적 전통의 재구성 과정을 미시사적으로 보여주는 중요한 사례로 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines the intellectual networks and adaptive strategies of Simjae Jo Geung-seop (1873-1933) during Korea's modern transition period through an analysis of his diary, “Simjae Diary” (深齋日記). By analyzing his personal interactions and geographical movements over 33 years as recorded in the diary, this research traces how Jo's intellectual networks formed and evolved. The study identifies three distinct phases in the development of his networks. First, during his early period in Changnyeong (1898-1903), his networks centered on local connections based on kinship, geographical proximity, and scholarly lineage. Second, after 1904, his sphere of activity expanded to Miryang, Uiryeong, and Inheung, facilitating broader exchanges with scholars throughout the Yeongnam region. Third, following his relocation to Jeongsan in 1914, his networks underwent a qualitative transformation as he began corresponding with intellectuals in Seoul and those in exile, particularly Kim Taek-young in China. The establishment of Jeongsan Seodang (school) around 1919-1920 demonstrates that Jo functioned not merely as a recluse but as a mediator and organizer of intellectual networks. This study discovers the “paradox of seclusion” as a strategic response of Confucian intellectuals during this transition period. While outwardly adopting the traditional form of seclusion, Jo actively constructed extensive and multilayered intellectual networks. This case provides important micro-historical evidence of how intellectual traditions were reconstructed through continuity and adaptation rather than rupture between tradition and modernity.
