From Hamlet to Misterman: The Dionysian Man on Stage

국문 초록

이 논문은 근현대 희곡작품 속에 등장하는 디오니소스적 인간을 추적하고 분석한다. 『비극의 탄생』에서 제시된 니체의 햄릿 논의를 출발점으로 삼고, 햄릿과 베케트의 『고도를 기다리며』에 등장하는 럭키를 니체의 비극론의 틀에서 비교 분석한다. 또한 이 논문은 니체적 관점에서 셰익스피어와 베케트를 관통하는 디오니소스적 인물의 조형을 계승하는 현대작가로 아일랜드 극작가인 엔다 월쉬를 선정하고, 그의 작품 속에 등장하는 디오니소스적 인간의 극적 위치와 의미를 밝혀본다. 이러한 논의는 비극성이 현대 희곡에서 발현되고 삭제되며 또 굴절되는 방식을 보다 다양하게 깊이 있게 이해한다는 점에서 그 가치를 담보한다.

영문 초록

Modern tragedy is marked by characters who suffer a sense of being caught or lost in a world where visionary grandeur cannot find its material base and is thus reduced to a relative value or sheer madness. In the end, the Dionysian hero falls into total silence or ends up in a whirlpool of self-destructive violence. This paper traces modern incarnations of the Dionysian man on stage whose visionary loneliness plays havoc on the tranquil appearance of the rationalized world. Taking Nietzsche’s account of Hamlet as the starting point, it establishes certain traits of the Dionysian hero such as linguistic hyperbole and frenetic motion that go in tandem with the confounding lethargy that forces the character to deviate constantly from the main dramatic action. The paper suggests that Lucky in Waiting for Godot is a modern successor of Hamlet, and it closes off with a discussion of the Dionysian man in Enda Walsh’s plays and his Misterman in particular.
