“Desecration and the Lover’s Night”: Tantric Iconography in W. B. Yeats’s Severed-Head Plays

국문 초록

이 글에서는 예이츠의 후기극 『큰 시계탑의 왕』과 『삼월의 보름달』을 탄트라 도상학과 철학으로 살펴본다. 두 극에 나타나는 참수와 춤의 이미지는 칼리, 친나마스타 같은 힌두 여신의 도상과 놀라운 유사점을 보이며, 몸을 긍정하는 동시에 초월하는 탄트라 철학은 상반의 융합의 상징으로서 성적 결합을 찬미하는 예이츠의 존재의 통합 개념과 유사하다. 탄트라는 근본적으로 신과의 합일이라는 목표를 가진 영적인 수행법으로, 탄트라 도상학에서 참수된 머리는 에고 의식의 초월을 상징한다. 참수가 역설적으로 결합을 가능하게 하는 예이츠의 두 극은 존재의 합일이라는 시인의 비전을 표현한다.

영문 초록

This essay examines Yeats’s Salome plays, The King of the Great Clock Tower and A Full Moon in March, in the light of Tantric iconography and philosophy. The image of dancing with a severed head in the plays shows a striking affinity to the icons of Hindu wisdom goddesses such as Kali and Chinnamasta. Tantric philosophy that both affirms and transcends the body parallels Yeats’s concept of Unity of Being. Tantra is a spiritual practice that seeks for divine union; the severed head in Tantric iconography symbolizes the transcendence of the ego. Through the symbol of beheading that paradoxically executes union, Yeats’s Salome plays aptly capture the spirit-matter dialectics in his Unity of Being.
