백제 무령왕대의 삼산 신앙

국문 초록

이 글에서는 무령왕대를 중심으로 웅진시대 백제의 삼산 신앙을 검토 해 보았다. 이를 통해서 필자가 백제의 삼산 신앙에 대해서 간단하게 제시했던 견해를 수정하는 한편, 보완하고자 하였다. 먼저 한성시대에 삼산 신앙이 성립되었을 가능성을 적극적으로 모색 해 보았다. 신라에서 초기부터 삼산 신앙의 성립을 언급하고 있다는 점 과 관련해서이다. 이는 산악신앙과 밀접한 연관성을 가지고 있었다. 이 와 같이 한성시대의 어느 시기엔가 모습을 갖추게 된 백제의 삼산신앙 은 한성에서 웅진으로 천도하면서 새로운 변화를 일으켰다. 신라나 백 제나 삼산 신앙이 왕도와 관련된 사상이라는 점에서 천도라는 요인이 삼산 신앙에 대한 커다란 변화를 일어나게 하였기 때문이다. 이때 웅진시대 백제의 삼산 신앙을 이해하기 위해서 문헌만이 아니라 공산성이나 무령왕릉에서 출토된 유물을 새롭게 검토하였다. 이에 웅진 시대에 들어와서 삼신 신앙이 사상적 변화를 새롭게 일으키고 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 삼산 신앙이 산신하고만 연결되었던 것이 아니었기 때문이다. 기존의 연구에서 일반적으로 언급되고 있듯이, 삼산 신앙이 도교와 밀접한 관련이 있는 것도 아니었다. 그보다는 웅진시대에 들어 와서 불교가 더욱 확산되면서 삼산 신앙은 불교와 결합하게 되었으며, 산악신앙은 불교보다 하위의 위치를 차지하면서 불교에 융합되었다. 이러한 과정을 거친 백제의 삼산 신앙은 사비시대에 들어가서 도교와 다시 연결되었다. 그리고 백제의 지방에 오악이 성립되면서 삼산 신앙 은 다시 새로운 변화를 가지게 되었다. 이에 삼산 신앙과 결합된 백제 의 불교 역시 다른 모습을 보여 주었을 것이다. 따라서 사비시대의 백 제에서 삼산 신앙이 어떠한 형태로 존재하게 되었는지, 그리고 어떠한 성격을 가지고 있었는지, 오악과는 어떠한 관계를 맺고 있었는지에 대 해서는 앞으로 검토해 볼 필요가 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This article examines the Tri-Mountain Faith of Baekje during the Woongjin era, focusing on the reign of King Muryeong. Through this analysis, the author seeks to revise and supplement previously presented views on Baekje's Tri-Mountain Faith. The conclusions are briefly summarized below. First, the possibility that the Tri-Mountain Faith was established during the Hanseong era is actively explored, particularly in light of records mentioning its early formation in Silla. This faith was closely associated with Mountain worship. The Tri-Mountain Faith, which took shape at some point during the Hanseong period, underwent significant transformation when Baekje moved its capital from Hanseong to Woongjin. The relocation of the capital, a pivotal factor for the monarchal ideology, catalyzed changes in the nature of the Tri-Mountain Faith in both Silla and Baekje. To understand the Tri-Mountain Faith during Baekje's Woongjin era, not only literary records but also artifacts unearthed from sites such as Gongsanseong Fortress and King Muryeong’s tomb were re-examined. This analysis revealed that the Tri-Mountain Faith underwent ideological changes during this period. It was no longer solely linked to mountain spirits. Contrary to the commonly held view that the Tri-Mountain Faith was closely related to Daoism, this study suggests otherwise. During the Woongjin era, as Buddhism spread more widely, the Tri-Mountain Faith became intertwined with Buddhism. Consequently, Mountain worship assumed a subordinate position, merging into the Buddhism framework. During the Sabi era, following this evolution, the Tri-Mountain Faith reconnected with Daoism. As Baekje's provincial regions formalized the Five Peaks system (Ohak), the Tri-Mountain Faith experienced further transformations. This development also likely altered the nature of Buddhism as practiced in Baekje when combined with the Tri-Mountain Faith. Therefore, future research should investigate the specific forms and characteristics of the Tri-Mountain Faith during the Sabi era, as well as its relationship with the Five Peaks system.
