국문 초록

기도와 주문은 이창동 영화에서 반복적으로 등장하는 종교적 요소다. 그의 영화에서 주술적 행위와 종교적 실천은 서사적인 소재에 머물지 않고 영화적 형식으로 확장된다. 그럼에도 기존의 이창동 연구는 그의 영화의 종교적 측면을 간과하고 주술적측면은 배제해 왔다. 이 논문의 목적은 감독의 종교적 문제의식이 전면에 등장하는<오아시스>, <밀양>, 그리고 <시>에서 주문과 기도의 특징을 분석함으로써, 두 요소의 영화적 기능을 밝히고 그 종교적 함의를 살펴보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 주문과 기도의 차이를 각각 수행성과 형상 개념을 통해 분석하고, 이 요소들이 그의 영화에서 어떻게 활용되는지를 추적한다. 결론적으로, <오아시스>에서는 주문과 기도가 공존하며 서로를 보완하고, <밀양>에서는 기도가 주문의 주술적 단계를 넘어 종교적 차원으로 나아간다. 반면, <시>에서는 주문과 기도가 시와 영화의 형식 속에서 통합된다. 이 과정에서 이창동은 인간의 이성과 의지로는 넘어서기 힘든 고통과 용서의 문제를 종교적 차원에서 접근할 수 있도록 길을 터주면서도, 이 과정을 영화적 경험으로 승화시킨다.

영문 초록

Prayer and incantation are recurring religious practices in Lee Chang-dong’s films. In his films, such religious and magical acts are more than mere narrative substance; they are expanded into a cinematic form. Yet, previous auteur studies on Lee tend to overlook or dismiss the religious aspect and incantatory elements in his work. The purpose of this study is to disclose the cinematic function and meaning of prayer and incantation by comparatively analyzing how these two elements are represented in his religious films, Oasis (2002), Secret Sunshine(2007), and Poetry (2010). After examining prayer and incantation through the concept of performativity and figural fulfillment respectively, this paper traces how the two elements are utilized in his films. While prayer and incantation coexist in a mutually complementary relationship in Oasis, the prayer surpass the enchantment stage of incantation and reaches the religious stage in Secret Sunshine. In Poetry, the two are integrated in the form of poetry and film. By creating a uniquely cinematic experience of prayer and incantation in the three films, Lee paves the way for the audience to contemplate subjects such as agony and mercy, which are difficult to make sense of solely through human reason and will, from a religious perspective.
