이 글은 웹툰 원작 OTT 드라마를 포스트시네마 시대 기술문화적 정동의 관점에서 분석한다. 디지털 스크린과 제작방식에 기반한 웹툰은 인쇄 만화 달리 페이지의 제약이 없고 이미지의 변형과 재생산이 용이하다. 특히, 스마트폰에 최적화된 최근 웹툰은 스크롤링을 통한 칸의 흐름을 통해 시공간을 창출한다. OTT의 경우, 재생속도 조절기능을 통해 보기의 경험을 바꾼다. 따라서, 디지털 기술에 기반한 웹툰과 OTT는 포스트-컨티뉴이티(post-continuity)를 창출하면서 시간의 통제와 관리라는 포스트시네마적 정동을 내포한다. 이런 측면에서 이 글은 대중적으로 호평받은 웹툰 원작 OTT 드라마 <안나라수마나라>(2022)와 <유미의 세포들>(2021-2022)을 주목한다. 두 작품에서 시공간적 경험의 디스포지티프로서 웹툰과 OTT는 인지되지 못한 또다른 현실 세계의 구조이자 현실의 경제 논리에서 벗어나지 못하는 디지털 기술의 불안과 디지털 시대 자기 전시의 충동이라는 포스트시네마적 정동과 조우한다. 또한, 시간의 자본화에 순응하거나 저항하기도 하고, 감정의 합리화를 촉발하면서 관람의 가성비라는 동시대 정동적 윤리에 반응하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 이와같이, 웹툰과 OTT 드라마의 포스트시네마적 정동을 포착하는 것은 디지털 시대 기술문화를 이해하는 새로운 출발점이 될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article delves into the analysis of Over-The-Top (OTT) dramas adapted from webtoons through the lens of technological and cultural impacts within the post-cinematic era. Webtoons, crafted for digital platforms, liberate themselves from the constraints of traditional print comics by offering limitless page lengths and facile image manipulation and reproduction. Notably, contemporary webtoons tailored for smartphones establish a unique spatiotemporal experience by employing panel-flow navigation through scrolling. Within the realm of OTT, the viewing encounter undergoes transformation via features like playback speed control. Consequently, webtoons and OTT productions leveraging digital technologies give rise to post-continuity dynamics, suggesting a post-cinematic influence marked by the regulation and manipulation of time. This study centers on critically acclaimed Netflix original series such as The Sound of Magic (2022) and Yumi’s Cells (2021-2022), both stemming from webtoon adaptations. In these instances, the convergence of webtoons and OTT represents a disruption of spatiotemporal immersion, intersecting with the postcinematic affect concerning digital technology anxiety and the compulsion for self-exposure in the digital age, which remains a less acknowledged facet of reality, ensnared within the economic logic of contemporary existence. Moreover, they can be interpreted as reflections of present-day affective ethics, oscillating between acquiescence to or defiance against the monetization of time and instigating a rationalization of emotions. Thus, grasping the postcinematic affect embedded within webtoons and OTT dramas may herald a fresh perspective for comprehending technological culture in the digital age.
