국문 초록

최근 10년 사이에 한국에 유학중인 외국인 학생 수가 3배나 증가했고 이와 동시에 국적도 다양해졌다. 그러나 외국인 학생 수의 양적 팽창과 국적의 다양화는 낙관적으로만 바라볼 수 없다. 외국인 학습자들은 학업과 생활의 부적응으로 생겨난 배타적인 반한 감정과 더불어 중도 포기 자가 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 이것은 언어적 장벽보다는 문화적 장벽에서 오는 현상으로 볼 수 있으며, 서로 다른 문화에 대한 거부감으로 인해 타문화를 쉽게 받아들이지 못하는 심적 거부에서 비롯된 것이다. 외국인 학습자들의 이러한 사회문화에 대한 부적응에는 한국인의 배타적 태도도 함께 작용한 것으로 나타난다. 이러한 문제의식 하에 본 연구에서는 다문화강의실에서 외국인 학습자와 한국인 학습자들이 역할극을 통해 실생활에서 발생하는 문화충돌을 강의실 안에 갖고 와서, 극화 과정을 통해 타문화를 상호 인지하고, 토의과정을 통해 타문화를 이해하고, 역할 전환을 통해 타문화에 대한 태도의 전환을 도모해 보고자 하였다. 이로서 외국인 학습자들에게 낯선 문화에 대해 알아가는 기회를 제공하고, 한국의 문화와 한국인과의 소통 방식의 바탕이 되는 지식과 정보 및 정서적 이해를 할 수 있는 문화능력을 향상 시킬 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 본 과정을 통해 한국인 학습자에게도 낯선 문화를 통해 자문화를 다시 돌아보는 기회를 제공해 줌으로써 다문화사회의 한 구성원으로 갖춰야할 상호문화능력을 향상 시킬 수 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

Over the last decade, the number of foreign students in Korea has increased threefold, and the nationalities of students have been diversifying at the same time. However, we cannot hold an optimistic view of the increase in foreign students and nationality diversification. Foreign learners increasingly fall by the wayside due to anti-Korean sentiment, which comes from maladjustment between study and living. This phenomenon results from a cultural barrier, not a language barrier. It proceeds from emotional rejection, a failure to accept other cultures due to culture clash. Also, the exclusive attitude of Koreans works together to create maladjustment of foreign learners in society. Based on these problems, this study examines real life cultural clashes through role play between a foreign learner and a Korean learner in a multicultural classroom. This study suggests attitudes toward other cultures can be improved by recognizing and understanding other cultures through a dramatized process of discussion and role play. In addition, foreign learners have opportunities to learn about unfamiliar cultures and improve cultural abilities to understand underlying knowledge, information, and emotion in Korean culture through communication with a Korean. Moreover, by providing Korean learners with a chance to look again at their own culture through the eyes of another, this study improves intercultural competence, which prepares them to become members of a multicultural society.
