국문 초록

서양 점성학은 고대 문명의 신화와 자연철학에 뿌리를 둔 학문으로, 인간의삶과 운명을 해석하는 독특한 체계를 형성해 왔다. 고대 메소포타미아 문명의 수메르 신화 속 신들은 각각 특정 천체와 연결되어 점성학의 원형을 제공했다. 또한 바빌로니아 창조 서사시 '에누마 엘리쉬'는 천체 운행과 인간 운명의 연관성을 보여주었고, 이집트 신화의 태양신 ‘라’는 황도대와 재생의 상징으로 해석되며, 그리스 신화 속 올림포스 12신은 각각 특정 행성과 연결되어 점성학적 해석에 활용되었다. 이처럼 신화는 천체 현상에 의미를 부여하고 인간의 삶과 연결하는 역할을 했다. 고대 그리스의 자연 철학자들은 4 원소설을 통해 점성학의 이론적 토대를 마련했다. 엠페도클레스·플라톤·아리스토텔레스는 물·불·공기·흙의 네 가지 원소가 우주 만물을 구성한다고 주장했는데, 이 4 원소의 속성은 훗날 점성학에서 황도12궁을 분류하는기준이 되었고, 프톨레마이스는 이를 바탕으로 천체의 움직임과 지구의 변화를 설명함으로써 점성학을 체계화했다. 이처럼 점성학은 신화적 상징과 철학적 탐구가 결합하여 발전해 왔으며, 오늘날에도 인간의 삶과 운명에 대해 통찰을 제공하는 학문으로 남아있다.

영문 초록

Western astrology, rooted in ancient myths and natural philosophy, is a unique system that interprets human life and destiny based on the movement of celestial bodies. In Mesopotamian civilization, Sumerian myths associated specific deities with celestial bodies, providing the original symbols for astrology. The Babylonian epic “Enuma Elish” demonstrated the connection between celestial motions and human fate, while the Egyptian sun god “Ra” symbolized the ecliptic and regeneration. In Greek mythology, the twelve Olympian gods were linked to specific planets, contributing to astrological interpretations. Ancient Greek natural philosophers established the theoretical foundation of astrology through the concept of the four elements. Empedocles, Plato, and Aristotle asserted that water, fire, air, and earth composed the universe. These elemental attributes later became the basis for categorizing the zodiac signs in astrology. Ptolemy systematized astrology by explaining celestial movements and Earth’s changes based on this framework. Thus, astrology has evolved by combining mythological symbols and philosophical inquiry, continuing to offer insights into human life and destiny today.
