Divine or Devilish: Power behind “Mother” in the Sci-fi Horror Alien

본 연구는 “마더(Mother)”라고 불리는 컴퓨터 본체 뒤에 숨겨진 권력 시스템을 분석함으로써 SF 공포물 <에이리언>(1979)을 재검토한다. 이 영화에서 여섯명의 승무원은 컴퓨터 “마더”와 애쉬(Ash)라는 사이보그와 함께 설치 우주선 노스트로모(Nostromo)를 타고 우주로 파견된다. 시간이 흘러 그들이 전능한 외계생명체로부터 학살당하는 순간이 찾아오자 살아남은 승무원들은 비로소 자신들의 우주여행의 궁극적인 목적이 미지의 종을 찾는 것이었음을 깨닫는다. 전통적으로, 오싹한 생김새를 가진 제노모프(Xenomorph)는 악마로 인식되는 반면 “마더”의 방은 일시적인 평화와 신성이 깃든 공간으로 간주된다. 그러나 이 연구는회사 웨일랜드 유타니 (Weyland Yutani)의 겉으로는 신성해 보이는 임무가 본질적으로는 외계인의 파괴적인 행위와 별반 다를 바 없음을 주장한다. 우선 이 논문의 전반부에서는 본 영화와 기존 연구에 대한 배경 지식을 제공할 것이다. 우주선의 설계 및 운영 시스템을 분석 한 후 본 연구는 컴퓨터 “마더”와 사이보그애쉬의 의미에 대해 논의한다. 이어지는 논의에서는 우주선의 구조와”마더 “와애쉬가 배치된 방식을 자본주의 기업의 불명예스러운 행위와 이념에 연결시켜이 기업의 본질적 특성을 밝힐 것이다. 본 연구는 페미니즘과 물신주의적 개념을통해, 자기기만에 빠진”신성한 “기업이 어떻게 인간존재를 자본화하는지를 논의하면서 끝맺을 것이다. 이 연구는 공상과학 공포영화에 있어서 종교와 기술적 요소의 결합을 재해석하기 위해 다양한 단서를 제시하며, 현대 사회에서 자본주의의 비인간적인 측면을 포착하고 폭로하는데 있어서 그 의의를 가진다.

영문 초록

The current study re-examines the science-fiction horror Alien (1979) by locating and analyzing the power hidden behind the computer mainframe named “Mother”. In the movie, six human crew were dispatched to outer space on an installer cruise Nostromo with the computer “Mother” and the cyborg Ash. It was not until the moment when they were slaughtered one after another by an apparently omnipotent alien creature that the remaining human group realized that the ultimate purpose of the space trip was to search for the unknown species. Traditionally, the creepy-looking xenomorph is viewed as a demon, whereas the chamber of “Mother” is regarded as a place with temporary peace and divine. However, the study claims that the seemingly sacred mission of the company Weyland Yutani is no less devilish in nature than the destructive behavior of the alien species. The first stage will provide some background information of the film and study. In the second stage, I will analyze the design and operational system of the spacecraft. The third stage will discuss the value of the computer “Mother” and the cyborg Ash. In the fourth stage, I attempt to expose the intrinsic quality of the corporation by linking the construction of the spaceship and the arrangement of “Mother” and Ash to the disgraceful action and ideology of the capitalistic firm. And finally, the paper will conclude that the self-flattered divine enterprise capitalizes human staff in feminist and fetishist concepts. This study presents various clues to reinterpret the combination of religious and technological elements in sci-fi horrors. It could also serve as a practice to identify and elucidate the inhuman aspect of capitalism in the contemporary world.
