The aim of this study is to assessnovel text difficulties for Korean language education measuring thedeterminants' effects to text difficulties. Precedent studies of textleveling were searched and the determinants for leveling novelswere drawn from those works. The three students' observationresults in literature education class for one semester and sixstudents' questionnaire answers to the novels 「A lucky day」, 「Please look after Mom.」, and 「The sufferings of two generations」were analysed. The decisive determinants drawn from this research,which affect the text difficulties, were the word-meaning‧expression determinant(culture-embedment, language modification,region), structure determinant(complicated structure), andsocio-cultural background determinant(exceptional history, the pastdays, the differences of viewpoints). The word-meaning‧expressiondeterminant is thought as the onset factor, but socio-culturalbackground determinant is more like the intensive factor forunderstanding and appreciating texts. The structure determinant isa somewhat weaker one than other two determinants. One ofdeterminant details, ‘dialects’, proved to have different weightaccording to students' residences, but it seemed to have unstableeffects depending on students. 「A lucky day」 have the determinantsof ‘culture-embedment, language modification, exceptional history, the past days’, 「Please look after Mom.」, ‘culture-embedment,language modification, structure’, and 「The sufferings of twogenerations」, ‘culture-embedment, language modification, region,exceptional history, the past days. But the students who have thesame background region as 「The sufferings of two generations」,Kyungsang province, did not feel so difficult toward that text. Thethree texts’ difficulty levels were measured with these results. Themeasured difficulty levels of three texts were firstly 「The sufferingsof two generations」 > 「A lucky day」 > 「Please look after Mom.」. On the other hand, with the considerations of students' residencesor their previous experiences of that dialect, the orders would be「The sufferings of two generations」 > 「A lucky day」 > 「Pleaselook after Mom.」 or 「The sufferings of two generations」 = 「Alucky day」 > 「Please look after Mom.」, but the effects of thisdeterminant seemed not to be stable. So in this work, the orders of「The sufferings of two generations」 ≑ 「A lucky day」 > 「Pleaselook after Mom.」 were presented. With the previously measuredtwo texts, 「Bincheo」 and 「Sonagi」, the levels were decided on 「The sufferings of two generations」 ≑ 「A lucky day」 > 「Sonagi」> 「Please look after Mom.」 > 「Bincheo」.
