영문 초록

This paper explores the semantic, pragmatic function and syntax of an interrogative ‘where’ in Korean and in Chinese. It aims to examine the similarities and differences of the interrogative ‘where’ between Korean and Chinese. This findings suggest that both ‘어디’ in Korean and ‘nar/nali’ in Chinese have interrogative usage which contribute to compose interrogative sentence. Furthermore both of them have non-interrogative usage as virtual reference, indefinite reference and rhetoric question, and they have a high level of corresponding relationship. However, ‘어디’ and ‘nar/nali’ have no corresponding relationship in the implication of extents. The findings further suggest that ‘어디’ in Korean have exclamatory usage which can be translated into ‘heng, o, en’ and so on in Chinese. ‘nar/nali’ in Chinese have negative reference which can be translated as ‘별말씀을요.’ ‘무슨 말씀이에요.’ ‘그건 무슨 말씀이에요’ in Korean. Both ‘어디’ and ‘nar/nali’ are widely used in a declarative sentence, an interrogative sentence and an imperative sentence. In addition, they can serve as subject, object, attribute, adverbial and independent word in a sentence. ‘어디’ can serve as predicate, while ‘nar/nali’ cannot
