국문 초록

본 고는 20세기 한국서예의 경향에 대해 연구한 것으로, 그 자체에 대한 연구만으로는 그 특색을 바로보기가 어렵다 판단되어, 동양의 서예 강국인 중국과 일본의 20세기 서예흐름과의 비교를 통하여 본 모습을 드러내는 방법으로 기술되었다. 이 시기는 세계의 열강의 패권다툼과 일제의 침략과 해방, 그리고 이념의 갈등 등으로 인해 한 중 양국 모두 매우 참담했던 시절이었으며, 침략국인 일본 또한 2차 세계대전의 패망으로 그리 좋은 모양새는 아니었다. 이런 흐름들을 극복하면서 서예문화 또한 나라마다 다른 특색을 가지고 펼쳐졌으며, 이 다름을 보며 우리가 무엇이 부족하였는가를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 우리나라의 서예는 어떤 이즘을 가지고 변화했다기 보다는 일제시대부터 있었던 국전의 행태만을 유지하며, 오직 그 길만이 서예가로 가는 통로의 역할을 하였고, 그러기에 본질과 서예미학에 대한 담론보다는 선생의 글씨를 배워 국전을 졸업하는 것이 지상명제처럼 된 것을 알 수 있었으며, 그 결과 스승과 꼭 빼 닮은 글씨들만 양산하기에 이르렀고, 이는 결국 세계 서예의 흐름에서 한국서예의 성숙도의 정도를 알 수 있게 하였다. 지금은 여러 파트에서 한류가 대단한 흐름을 엮어가고 있다. 서예도 또한 우리만의 정신 속에 승화될 부분이 있다고 생각한다. 그러기 위해서는 철저한 작가정신을 가지고 부단히 각자의 모습과 정신에 걸 맞는 서예세계를 찾기 위해 매진해야 하리라 본다.

영문 초록

I am deeply aware that a study on the trend of the Korean calligraphy of the 20th century is not possible without further search and quest for the that of the Chinese and Japanese Calligraphy in the same period. In this age, because of the wars of the World Powers, the Japanese imperialism, the invasion, the liberation and the the ideological quarrel, Korea and China had suffered a crushing tragedy. Even in the case of Japan, she had suffered from the mere wreck of her former self. However they successfully tided over their historical difficulties. And China and Japan got their own feature in the calligraphic culture. On the other hand, I would like to take a good look at what Korea falls short of. Through the 20th century the Korean calligraphic culture not had her own idea but followed the National Art Exhibition tradition of the former Japanese imperialism. What is worse, most Korean calligraphers lost their essence and discourse to the calligraphic aesthetics. They devoted their energies for glorifying the winning a prize in the National Art Exhibition. As the result, students are the exact counterpart of their masters, their penmanship is the very image of their masters', and the Korean calligraphic culture is behindthe times and the world trends. Recently the Han-Ryu, so called, is in vogue in lots of parts. Now the Korean calligraphers should strive with the firm master-spirit and the characteristic style so that the Korean calligraphy also may get her own feature.
