국문 초록

  이 연구의 목적은 제17대 총선에서 세대가 어떤 이유와 경로를 거쳐 특정 정당을 선택하여 투표하게 되었는가를 고찰하는 데 있다. 여기서 세대는 특정의 역사적 의미나 경험에 근거하여 형성된 집단으로 규정한다. 구체적으로 서술하면, 이 연구에서는 경로분석 모형을 바탕으로 세대가 정당지지 선택에 직접적으로 영향을 주는 효과뿐만 아니라 이념, 정치 효능감과 같은 다른 매개 변수를 통해 간접적으로 영향을 주는 효과에 대해서도 고찰한다.
  세대별 정당지지 경로 분석을 통해 다음과 같은 잠정적 결론이 도출되었다. 첫째, 최근 한국 선거에서 세대변수가 지역주의 변수와 마찬가지로 중요한 영향을 미치고 있다는 가설이 입증되었다. 즉, 한나라당, 우리당, 민노당 지지 등 유권자의 지지 정당 선택 결정에서 나타난 세대의 직접효과와 간접효과를 종합해 볼 때 세대와 정당지지간에 상당히 강한 인과적 관계가 있다는 것이 입증되었다.
  둘째, 17대 총선이 ‘탄핵선거’였다는 세간의 평가가 실증적으로 확인되었다. 특히, 세대별로 탄핵에 대한 찬성 여부가 극명하게 갈리게 되어 탄핵을 반대하는 세대는 우리당을 지지했고, 탄핵을 찬성하는 세대는 한나라당을 지지했다. 이러한 결과는 민노당을 제외하고 우리당과 한나라당 지지경로에서 세대→탄핵 찬성 여부→정당지지 경로로부터 형성되는 효과가 세대의 직접효과와 다른 간접효과들 보다 훨씬 큰 데서 잘 나타나 있다.
  셋째, 탄핵의 역풍속에서도 이번 17대 총선은 역대 총선과 마찬가지로 세대별로 미약하게 나마 노무현 대통령에 대한 중간평가의 성격을 띠었다. 이는 세대가 이념 또는 여야성향을 매개로 대통령 국정운영에 대해 평가하며지지 정당을 선택하는 경로가 통계적으로 유의미한데서 잘 나타나 있다.
  넷째, 민노당의 강한 지지 기반은 여야성향과 같은 당파적 태도도 아니고 대통령에 대한 회고적 평가도 아닌 이념 변수가 가장 강하게 작용했다.

영문 초록

  The purpose of this study is to explore which generations supported particular parties, through what reasons and paths, in the 17th National Assembly election. ‘Generation’ in this study refers to the cohort group formed by specific historical meanings and experiences. More specifically, this study, based on path analysis, examines not only the direct effect of the generation on the party support, but also its indirect effects through various intermediary variables, such as ideology and political efficacy.
  The following tentative conclusions were drawn from the path analysis of party support. First, the hypothesis that the generation variable, like regional variable, had been influential in the Korean election was confirmed. Namely, when we summarized both the direct and indirect effects of the generation, manifest in the decision of supporting parties, such as Hannara party, Uri party, the Democratic Labor party, there was a strong causal relation between the generation and the party support.
  Second, the secular evaluation that the 17th National Assembly election was a sort of impeachment election was empirically verified. Especially, the manifest difference among cohort groups with respect to the support of the impeachment was relevant. The generation group that accepted the impeachment supported the Hannara party, whereas the cohort group that denied the impeachment supported the Uri party. These outcomes, with the exception of the Democratic Labor party, were well shown up in the sense that the effects, generated by the path from the generation variable via the impeachment variable to the party support variable, were larger than the direct and other indirect effects of the generation variables.
  Third, the 17th National Assembly election was seen as a mid-term evaluation against the president Roh Mu Hyun that appeared frequently in the previous National Assembly elections. It was evidently represented from the finding that the path that the generation affected the selection of party via ideology and the pro-government or pro-opposition party tendency while evaluating the state operation of the president was statistically significant.
  Fourth, the strong supporting base of the Democratic Labor party was an ideology variable rather than a partisan attitude or a retrospective evaluation against the president.
