지역 전설의 해석체로서 지역 정체성 연구 충주 ‘중앙탑 전설’ 사례를 포함하여

국문 초록

로컬리티와 관련된 기존의 문학 연구는 ‘문학의 지역성’을 다룬 연구이거나 ‘지역의 문학성’을 다룬 연구라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 연구는 지역을 문학에 환원시키거나 문학을 지역에 종속시키는 한계를 드러낸다. 층위가 다른 두 세계인 ‘로컬리티’와 ‘문학’을 어떤 한 세계로 환원 내지 종속시키지 않기 위해서는 어떤 지역의 ‘로컬리티를 함축한 문학’을 대상으로 ‘그 문학이 포착한 로컬리티’를 잘 드러내어 성격을 밝혀야 할 것이다. 이를 위해서 로컬리티에 대한 개념을 명확히 하고, 그것이 문학이라는 매체로 재현되었을 때 어떻게 의미화되는지를 파악해 하는 것이다. 로컬리티를 지역 정체성의 개념으로 포착하기 위해 지리학 영역에서 제시한 사회 구조의 개념과 자연 세계와 인간의 사고를 범주화한 퍼스의 범주론을 활용하여 로컬리티를 실체화하였다. 이렇게 실체화한 로컬리티, 즉 지역 정체성을 문학 텍스트가 어떻게 재현하는지를 파악하기 위해 기호작용의 관점에서 대상을 지시하는 표상체의 해석체를 분석하였다. 표상체인 전설은 현실의 지역 정체성을 대상으로 지시하며, 이 표상체에 대한 해석체가 전설에서 포착해야 하는 문학 텍스트로 기호화된 지역 정체성이다. 이러한 방식으로 충주에 전하는 중앙탑 전설 세 편을 분석하였다. 전설의 내용은 상이하지만, 모두 탑이 세워진 ‘충주’가 어떤 곳인지 말하고 있다는 점에서 공통적이다. 탑이 있는 곳은 명당이며, 국토의 중앙이며, 중심[王都]이 될 만한 공간이지만 오히려 그래서 중심으로부터 억압받은 곳이다. 전설들이 표상한 지역 정체성은 과거의 어느 시점에 형성되기 시작한 것이지만, 현재까지도 지역민들에게 수용되고 재해석되며 자신의 지역을 이해하고, 지역을 통해 욕망을 형성하는 데 영향을 끼친다. 문학 텍스트 분석을 통해 밝힌 해석체로서의 지역 정체성은 실재한다고 여겨지는 로컬리티 그 자체의 형태는 아닐 것이다. 문학 텍스트의 해석체로서 지역 정체성의 각 범주들은 그 성격에 따라 ‘자체적 고유성’, ‘관계적 변별성’, ‘상징적 정체성’이라고 수 있다. 그리고 이 해석체들이 기호로서 갖는 성격을 추상화하여 범주화하면 각각 ‘자의적/주관적/자족적’, ‘관계적/상대적/지시적’, ‘신앙적/관습적/지배적’이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In Korea, literary studies on locality address either the “regionality of literature” or the “literariness of the region.” These studies reveal the limitations of reducing the region to literature or subordinating literature to its region. To avoid reducing or subordinating the two different layers of the worlds of “locality” and “literature” into a single world, it is essential to reveal and clarify the characteristics of “locality captured by literature”, by targeting the “literature that contains the locality” of a certain region. This requires clarifying the concept of locality and understanding how it is signified when represented through the medium of literature. We have attempted to substantiate locality by utilizing the “social structure” proposed by geographers to capture locality as a concept of regional identity and the “categories” devised by Peirce to categorize the natural world and human thought. To understand how this substantiated locality (regional identity) is represented in literary texts, we analyzed the interpretants of signs that refer to the objects from the perspective of semiosis. The legend as a representamen refers to the locality of reality, and the interpretant of this representamen becomes the locality in the literary text that must be captured in the legend. In this way, three legends related to Jungang Pagoda in Chungju were analyzed. While the contents of the legends is different, they all have in common that they are talking about the place where the pagoda is located, “Chungju”. The place is a sacred site, the center of the country, and a space that could become the capital, but because of that, it was oppressed by the central government at the time. The locality represented by these legends continues to be accepted and reinterpreted by the local people in the present day, influencing their understanding of their region and the formation of desires through that region. The locality revealed through the analysis of literary texts is not the form of the object itself that exist. Rather, the categories of locality as interpretants, which include “intrinsic uniqueness”, “relational distinctiveness”, and “symbolic identity”, pertain to their characteristics. Furthermore, when abstracting and categorizing the characteristics of these interpretants as signs, they can be described as “arbitrary/subjective/self-sufficient”, “relational/relative/indexical”, and “faith-based/customary/dominant”.
