국문 초록

본 연구는 구비설화 <깨달은 허망>을 대상으로 인간의 스토리 기반 인지 구조 (narrative cognition)에 주목한다. 이야기 속 서사 주체가 ‘허망하다’라는 말의 의미를 어떤 인지적 과정을 통해 깨닫게 되는지를 중심으로 인물이 경험을 조직하고 의미화하는 방식을 서사 구조 분석을 통해 접근하고자 한다. 나아가 인간이 삶을 어떻게 이해하고 해석하는지를 탐색하였다. 인간은 언어를 통해 외부 세계와 상호작용을 하며 삶을 구성하고, 이는 특히 구비설화와 같은 말의 예술 속에서 구체화된다. 본 연구는 민간설화의 이야기 체험을 통해 인간이 삶을 이해하고, 감정을 교류하며, 지식을 내면화하는 과정을 분석의 주요 지점으로 삼았다. <깨달은 허망>에서 여성 인물은 ‘허망하다’의 의미를 깨닫기 위해 탐색을 시작하고, 가상 공간에서의 체험을 통해 현실 세계에서 인식할 수 없었던 삶의 진실에 접근한다. 이 이야기의 서사 구조는 꿈이라는 매개를 통해 ‘현실–가상–현실’로 순환되며, 이야기 안에 또 다른 이야기가 삽입된 메타 설화 구조로도 분석할 수 있다. 이러한 서사 흐름은 인간 인지의 근본 구조와 닮아 있다. 주인공은 무지의 상태에서 출발해 인지 자극과 감정의 통과를 거쳐 특정한 앎을 체화하게 되는 과정을 보여준다. 특히 이 설화는 여성의 경험을 통해 ‘무지–경험–체화’라는 스토리 기반 인지 구조의 전형을 보여주며, 인지 전환과 통합을 이끌어내는 서사의 내적 메커니즘을 선명히 드러낸다. 이처럼 인간의 인지는 스토리적 구조와 유사하다. 따라서 구비설화를 연구하고 분석하는 것은 인간의 인지적 특징에 대한 정보들을 탐색하는 것과 동일한 작업이다. 이야기에서는 가상 공간에서 체득한 것, 정보들을 제공하는데 구비문학의 가치와 의의는 바로 현실 세계를 더욱 확장시켜 삶을 이해할 수 있게 하는 데 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines the oral folktale The Realized Futility with a focus on the narrative cognition of human beings. It investigates how the protagonist comes to understand the meaning of the phrase “it is vain” through a specific cognitive process and how her experiences are organized and made meaningful within the narrative structure. Through this approach, the study explores how humans interpret and make sense of life. Human beings interact with the external world through language, and such interaction is embodied in the verbal art of oral folktales. This research highlights how narrative experience enables people to understand life, exchange emotions, and internalize knowledge. In The Realized Futility, the female protagonist begins a journey to understand the meaning of vanity and, through virtual space such as, encounters truths that are inaccessible in the real world. The story follows a “reality–virtuality–reality” structure and takes the form of a meta-narrative in which one story is embedded within another. This narrative flow mirrors the structure of human cognition: it begins with ignorance, passes through emotional and cognitive experiences, and arrives at embodied understanding. The tale exemplifies the narrative cognitive structure of “ignorance–experience–embodiment,” revealing the internal mechanisms through which narrative induces cognitive transformation and integration. In this sense, human cognition resembles a narrative form. To analyze oral folktales is to explore the cognitive features of human life. Folktales offer insights acquired in virtual spaces, and the value of oral literature lies in its ability to expand human understanding by integrating insights into the real world.
