열녀 연구사에 대한 젠더 연구 관점의 검토와 과제, 그리고 제언

국문 초록

본 논문은 열녀 연구사가 고전여성문학에서 페미니즘 비평으로서의 젠더 연구를 추동해 온 의미가 있다고 보고 지금까지의 연구의 흐름과 경향을 살펴보고자 했다. 이 를 위해 학위논문 70여 편, 단행본 60여 편, 학술논문 400여 편을 대상으로 열녀 관련 연구 성과를 검토했다. 열녀 관련 학위논문은 2000년대 이후 활성화되기 시작하여 2010년대 이후 ‘도상, 컨텐츠, 지역 축제, 한중 열녀 비교’ 등의 주제로 다변화되었다. 열 관련 단행본은 크게 ‘전공 및 교양서’, ‘원전 및 자료집’, ‘소설 및 콘텐츠 저작’으로 분류하여 성격을 살펴보았다. 관련 학술논문은 ‘①열녀전, 열 기록, ②정절 담론, 정려 제도, ③여성인식, 여성담론, ④고소설 속 열녀, ⑤구비설화 속 열녀, ⑥여훈서, ⑦열녀도, 행실도, ⑧영화 등 컨텐츠 속 열녀, ⑨지역 열녀, ⑩가사 속 열녀, ⑪열녀 유서, ⑫특정 작품, 작가의 열녀 기록’으로 주제를 분류하여 연구 경향을 살폈다. 열녀에 대한 초기 연구가 텍스트와 역사 기록에서 열녀의 존재를 발견하는데 초점을 두었다면 이후 연구들은 남성 지배의 폭력성을 드러내는 기호로, 각 시대의 젠더 불평등의 구조를 드러내는 담론적 매개로 열녀를 읽어내고 있음을 지적했다. 이는 ‘열녀’ 형상이 고전여성문학의 학문적 정체성을 묻고 지식의 경계가 만들어지는 과정을 보여주는 시금석 역할을 해왔음을 보여준다고 해석했다. ‘열녀’는 여성 욕망이나 존재의 적극성, 능동성을 찾기 어려운, 수동적이고 희생적인 피해자 형상처럼 보이기 쉽다. 그러나 젠더 관점에서 검토한 열녀 연구사는 열녀가 여전히 하위 여성주체로서 상징적, 정치적 해석의 가능성을 내포한 형상이며, 고전여성문학의 학술적 정체성을 고도화할 수 있는 생성적이고 현재적인 주제임을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the significance of the study of virtuous women in promoting gender studies as feminist criticism in classical women's literature and examines the flow and trends of research to date. To this end, this paper reviewed the research results related to chaste women, including approximately 70 dissertations, 60 books, and 400 academic papers. Dissertations on chaste women began to become active after the 2000s, and after the 2010s, they diversified into topics such as ‘images, contents, regional festivals, and comparison of chaste women in Korea and China.’ The monographs on chaste women were broadly categorized into ‘major and general books,’ ‘original sources and data collections,’ and ‘novels and content writing,’ and their characteristics were examined. Academic papers on chaste women were classified into the following topics to examine research trends: ① biographies of chaste women, records of chaste conduct, ② discourse on chastity, system of Jeongnyeong, ③ perception of women, discourse on women, ④ chaste women in classical novels, ⑤ chaste women in oral tales, ⑥ books on women’s teachings, ⑦ paintings of chaste women, paintings of conduct, ⑧ chaste women in content such as movies, ⑨ regional chaste women, ⑩ chaste women in lyrics, ⑪ wills and testaments of chaste women, ⑫ records of chaste women by specific works and authors. Early studies on chaste women focused on discovering their presence in texts and historical records. In contrast, later studies on chaste women interpret them as symbols that reveal the violence of male domination and as discursive mediators that reveal the structure of gender inequality in each era. This shows that ‘Chaste Woman’ is a touchstone that questions the academic identity of classical women’s literature and shows the process by which the boundaries of knowledge are created. The ‘virtuous woman’ is often seen as a figure in whom it is difficult to find the activeness of female desire or existence, or as a passive and sacrificial victim. However, studies on chaste women from a gender perspective show that chaste women are still a subordinate female subject and a figure that contains the possibility of symbolic and political interpretation. Furthermore, the chaste woman can be said to be a generative and current subject that can enhance the academic identity of classical women's literature.
