대학 진학 선택의 불평등 실태와 변화: 재수·반수 선택의 계층화를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구는 한국교육종단연구 2005, 2013 자료를 이용하여 가정배경과 학업성취에 따른 대학 진학 선택 결과에서의 교육불평등 실태를 분석하였다. 그 과정에서 재수, 반수 등 대학 입시 준비 기간을 양적으로 늘리는 선택을 하는 학생들의 특성을 면밀히 살펴보고, 10년 차이의 출생코호트 간 교육불평등 실태를 비교한 결과를 거시적 교육환경의 변화와 관련지어 논의하였다. 분석 결과, 가정배경과 학업성취 수준에 따라 진학하는 대학의 위세가 달라지고 가정배경이 양호한 학생들 가운데 만족할 만한 진학 결과를 얻지 못한 이들에게서 주로 재수나 반수 등의 선택이 이루어질 가능성이 커지는 경향이 드러났다. 한편 수능 성적은 진학하는 대학의 위세에 미치는 영향이 분명하지만, 대학 입시에서 수시의 비중이 확대되고 있는 최근에는 이전보다는 그 영향력이 축소된 것으로 나타났다. 내신 성적이 중심이 되는 수시 전형에 집중하여 대학 진학을 준비하는 학생들은 대학 위세와 무관하게 이듬해 재수나 반수를 선택할 가능성이 작았으며, 그러한 경향성이 최근에 올수록 강해지고 있었다. 다만 최근 코호트에서는 가정배경이 양호한 학생들에게서 내신 성적이 좋을수록 재수나 반수를 선택할 가능성이 차별적으로 증가하는 변화가 포착되었다. 이상의 분석 결과를 바탕으로 대학 입시 제도 및 문화의 개선 방향에 대하여 논의하였다.

영문 초록

Using the data from the Korean Education Longitudinal Study (KELS) 2005 and 2013, this study analyzed educational inequality in university entry choices related to family background and academic achievement. We also examined the characteristics of students who opt for extended university preparation periods, such as ‘jaesu(retaking the university admission process)’ or ‘bansu(retaking the process while enrolled in university)’, and compared the patterns of educational inequality between the two cohorts, separated by a decade, linking the findings to macro-level changes in the educational environment. The results showed that the prestige of the university attended was stratified by family background and academic achievement. Furthermore, students from privileged backgrounds who were dissatisfied with their initial university placement were more likely to choose jaesu or bansu. Notably, while the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) score had a significant impact on the prestige of the university attended, its influence appeared to have diminished in recent years compared to the past, coinciding with the expansion of the ‘susi(early admission tracks)’ in the university admission process. Students who focused their preparation on susi, which is primarily based on high school GPA, were less likely to choose jaesu or bansu the following year, regardless of the prestige of the initial university, and this trend has strengthened over time, especially in the more recent cohort. However, a clear change emerged in the recent cohort: among students from privileged family backgrounds, the likelihood of choosing jaesu or bansu paradoxically increased for those with higher high school GPA. Based on these findings, the study discussed implications for improving the university entrance system and its surrounding culture.
