플라톤의 ｢고르기아스｣: 수사술과 논박

국문 초록

이 글은 수사술과 논박의 차이점을 규명하는 데 의의를 둔다. ｢고르기아스｣는 소크라테스와 고르기아스의 논의를 통해 수사술이 무엇인가를 밝히는 대화편이다. 소크라테스가 수사술의 본질과 기능을 분석하는 과정은 소크라테스의 논박이 무엇인가를 드러내는 과정이기도 하다. 수사술은 ‘밖을 지향하는 것’으로서, 대중을 상대로 그럴 듯하게 보이는 것, 대중의 호응과 열광에 관심을 기울이는 것을 최우선시한다. 당연한 결과로서 웅변가가 구사하는 말은 진위 판단, 엄밀한 논리적 분석에 관심을 두지 않는다. 상대방을 이기는 것에 관심이 있다 보니 웅변가는 어떻게든 우겨서, 설령 자기주장이 사실을 왜곡하는 것이라도 결코 그 주장을 굽히지 않는다. 반면, 소크라테스의 논박은 ‘안을 지향하는 것’으로서, 목하 논의의 주제를 논리에 입각하여 치밀하게 분석하고, 지식 자체의 기준에 의해 대상의 진위를 파악하는 데 목적을 둔다. 논박은 대중에게 어떻게 보이는가 하는 것에 관심을 두지 않고, 내가 알고 있는 지식, 나의 발언과 생각이 과연 타당한가를 검토하는 것을 중시한다. 논박은 상대방의 오류를 드러내는 것뿐만 아니라, 자신의 생각을 끊임없이 검토하여 참된 지식에 도달하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 소크라테스는 논박이 타인을 겨냥하기도 하지만, 일차적으로 자신의 앎을 검토하기 위하여 자신을 향해 이루어지는 것임을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

This article is significant in clarifying the difference between rhetoric and refutation. Gorgias is a dialogue that reveals what rhetoric is through the discussion between Socrates and Gorgias. The process of analyzing the nature and function of rhetoric is also the process of revealing what Socrates’ refutation is. The art of rhetoric is ‘outward-looking’, and it places the highest priority on what is shown to the public, and on the public’s response and enthusiasm. As a natural result, the words used by orators are not interested in judgment of truth or strict logical analysis. Since they are interested in winning, they will try to persuade in any way, and will never back down from their claims, even if their claims distort the facts. On the other hand, Socrates’ refutation is ‘inward-looking’, and aims to analyze the current topic of discussion based on logic and to determine the truth or falsity by the standard of knowledge itself. Refutation does not focus on what is shown to the public, but rather on examining whether the knowledge I know, my statements, and my thoughts are valid. Refutation aims not only to reveal the other party’s errors, but also to constantly examine one’s own thoughts and reach true knowledge. Socrates shows that although argument is sometimes directed at others, it is primarily directed at oneself in order to examine one’s own knowledge.
