국문 초록

본 연구는 한국에 거주 중인 중도입국 청소년을 대상으로 그들이 경험한 언어가 제3언어인 영어의 통사구조의 습득에 미치는 영향을 영어의 관계절과 wh-의문문을 통해 분석했다. 본 연구에서는 제1언어와 제2언어를 학습한 중도입국 청소년들이 제3언어를 습득할 때, ‘누적 향상 모델’과 ‘L2 지위 요소 모델’ 중 어떠한 모델에 더 영향을 받는지를 알아보고자 한다. 누적 향상 모델(Cumulative Enhancement Model, Flynn, Foley, & Vinnitskaya, 2004)은 이전에 경험한 문법적 특성이 다음 언어 습득에 중립적 또는 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 가설이고 L2 지위 요소 모델(L2 Status Factor Model, Bardel & Falk, 2007; Williams & Hammarberg, 1998; Rothman & Amaro, 2010)은 L1이 아닌 L2만이 L3 습득에 긍정적 또는 부정적인 전이의 요인이 된다는 가설이다. 이와 같은 결과는 L3와 유사한 L1 wh-매개변수가 영어 wh-의문문을 습득하는데 촉진적인 역할을 한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 종합적으로 관계절과 wh-의문문을 실험한 모든 과업에서 누적 향상 모델을 지지하는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the impact of first (L1) and second language (L2) on the acquisition of the syntax of English as a third language (L3) focusing on relative clauses and wh-questions among foreign-born youth living in Korea. While numerous models explore the influence of a first and second language on third language acquisition, this research implements the Cumulative Enhancement Model and the L2 Status Factor Model to determine their respective impacts on L3 acquisition (Flynn, Foley, & Vinitskaya, 2004; Bardel & Falk, 2007; Williams & Hammarberg, 1998; Rothman & Amaro, 2010). The Cumulative Enhancement Model hypothesizes that prior grammatical knowledge either neutrally or positively influences subsequent language acquisition as opposed to the L2 Status Factor Model which hypothesizes that it is specifically the L2 that has a positive or negative transfer effect on L3 acquisition. These findings demonstrate that an L1 wh-parameter resembling L3 plays a facilitating role in acquiring wh-questions in English. In conclusion, the results of the relative clauses and the wh-questions tests are consistent with the proposed hypothesis of the Cumulative Enhancement Model.
