공공 도서관 인기 대출 그림책에 나타난 문화 다양성 내용분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 3년간 공공 도서관에서 대출된 인기 그림책을 대상으로 문화 다양성의 내용을 분석한 논문이다. 문화 다양성은 모든 문화 주체를 동등한 가치로 존중하는 실천적 경향성을 일컫는 것으로 간주하고, 이를 바탕으로 영유아교육에서 문화 다양성이 제공하는 중요 가치를 중심으로 연구를 진행하였다. 본 연구는 전국 공공 도서관의 대출 순위 200위 이내의 그림책 중 165권을 분석하였고, 그 중 문화 다양성 주제와 관련된 22권의 내용을 심층적으로 검토했다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 그림책 작가의 대다수는 국내 작가였고, 등장인물은 동양인과 동물이 주를 이루었다. 그러나 문화 다양성과 관련된 주제를 다룬 그림책은 전체의 13.3%에 불과했다. 둘째, 그림책에 나타난 문화 다양성의 내용은 ‘한국의 전통문화와 어울림의 가치’, ‘이해, 공감, 포용, 그리고 확장’, ‘나눔의 재정의’였다. 특히 한국의 전통문화와 어울림의 가치가 중요하게 제시되었고, 다양한 특성과 차이를 이해하고 공감, 포용, 확장하는 과정과 공평한 분배와 나눔의 가치를 새롭게 정의하는 내용을 진실성 있게 보여주고 있었다. 이 연구는 그림책이 영유아의 문화적 감수성을 높이는 데 중요한 역할을 하며, 더 다양한 문화적 배경을 반영한 그림책의 개발과 활용이 필요하다는 시사점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed cultural diversity content in children’s picture books that were popular in public libraries in South Korea over the past three years. Cultural diversity is the practical tendency to respect all cultural subjects equally. Based on this premise, the study focuses on the important values that cultural diversity provides in early childhood education. The study analyzed 165 of the top 200 picture books in the nationwide public library loan rankings and conducted an in-depth review of 22 books on cultural diversity. The analysis results are as follows: First, most picture book authors were domestic authors, and the main characters were mainly Asians and animals. However, only 13.3% of the picture books dealt with themes related to cultural diversity. Second, the content of cultural diversity in picture books included “The Value of Korean Traditional Culture and Harmony,” “Understanding, Empathy, Inclusion, and Expansion,” and “Redefinition of Sharing.” In particular, the value of Korean traditional culture and harmony was prominently presented, and the process of understanding-empathizing-including-expanding various characteristics and differences, and redefining the value of fair distribution and sharing were authentically demonstrated. This study suggests that picture books play an essential role in enhancing the cultural sensitivity of young children and highlights the need for developing and utilizing picture books that reflect more diverse cultural backgrounds.
