사이버대학교 중도탈락 학생의 재입학 과정에 관한 연구

국문 초록

사이버대학교는 성인학습자에게 고등교육 기회를 제공하는 중요한 역할을 하지만, 높은 중도탈락률은 여전히 중요한 문제로 남아 있다. 이에 본 연구는 사이버대학교 중도탈락 학생의 재입학 과정을 살펴보고 학습자가 중도탈락 이후부터 재입학까지의 과정에서 겪게 되는 다양한 경험과 맥락적 요소를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 K사이버대학교의 중도탈락 학생 중 재입학을 통해 다시 학습을 재개한 12명을 면담하고 질적 분석을 실시하였다. 이를 통해 학생이 중도탈락한 배경과 재등록을 결김하게 된 맥락 및 동기, 결심 이후 재등록까지의 과정을 집중적으로 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 중도탈락 학생은 일과 육아를 병행하며 시간 관리의 어려움과 지원 시스템의 부족 등으로 인해 “홀로싸움”을 경험하였으며 결국 학업을 계속하기 어려운 상황에 직면하게 되었다. 그러나 학업 중단 이후 자신의 목표와 발전을 고민하고 학습의 필요성을 깨닫는 “숙고의 시간”을 경험하였으며, 학업 중단에 대한 후회와 아쉬움, 그리고 가족이나 교수 등 주변의 격려와 지지가 “재도전의 의지”를 다지게 하였다. 이를 통해 재입학이라는 어려운 결정을 하게 되었으며, 일과 학업의 균형을 맞추기 위한 나름의 전략을 수립하고 학업을 계속하기 위해 보다 적극적으로 도움을 구하는 등 “자기 성찰과 위기 극복” 노력을 기울이고 있음을 확인하였다. 이상의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 사이버대학교 중도탈락 학생에 대한 보다 체계적인 지원과 지속적인 관심이 필요하다는 점을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

Cyber universities play a crucial role in providing higher education opportunities for adult learners. However, the high dropout rate remains a significant issue. This study examines the re-enrollment process of students who dropped out of cyber universities, analyzing the various experiences and contextual factors they encounter from dropout to re-enrollment. To this end, we conducted qualitative interviews with 12 students who resumed their studies after dropping out of K-Cyber University. The study focuses on the reasons behind their dropout, the context and motivations for re-enrollment, and the process from decision-making to re-registration. The analysis revealed that dropout students faced a “solitary struggle” due to difficulties in time management and a lack of support systems while balancing work and childcare, ultimately leading to their inability to continue their studies. However, after discontinuing their studies, they went through a “period of contemplation,” during which they reflected on their goals and personal development and recognized the need for further education. Regret over their dropout experience, coupled with encouragement and support from family members and professors, strengthened their “determination to re-enroll.” As a result, they made the challenging decision to return to school and actively engaged in “self-reflection and crisis resolution” by developing strategies to balance work and academics while seeking support to sustain their studies. Based on these findings, this study suggests that cyber universities need to provide more systematic support and sustained attention to dropout students to facilitate their re-engagement in learning.
